  • Those were not scheme wins. Yes, MSU made a big defensive change and so didn't go into the game with a dinoscheme as it has in the past, but Michigan played very well in the first half of both games, and the numbers do not suggest anything out of the ordinary. Michigan scored enough to win with it's regular defense, and defended well enough to win with it's usual crappy offense. But MSU starts 2 seniors and its best player is a very experienced junior. That's probably why Michigan's kids lost the plot both times and MSU's didn't. Twice they were in the position they found themselves all year with about 15 minutes to go.

Incredibly important game, IMO. I'd love to be the 2 out west, and it seems to me to be complete nonsense to let Gonzaga hang on to that one seed after losing in their conference tournament. But more importantly I'd worry about 3 losses to MSU putting a monkey on their backs at the wrong time. This team seems to me to lack leadership and can crumble at key points, and there's no Mo-level scorer good enough to take over a game offensively when it's needed and to get everybody fired up in the process. This year was supposed to be about learning to play as a contender and coming into the tournament with a high seed and expectations that a Final Four run wouldn't be just a nice surprise but a good opportunity to take the whole thing. Easy to see how the intangibles mandate a win today and challenge the narrative with a loss.

    • Makes sense on both counts: The technicals of the game itself and the intangibles.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

      • What surprised me against Sparty wasn't the inability to score (a lil'), but the mental breakdowns during those streaks that gave Sparty easy baskets; defensively, second chance points and via turnovers. Sparty is good defensively but not as good as good as they looked, we'll see if they are just are a terrible matchup for us which I don't think is true. Goins is good but he's not a Wooden award candidate like we made him look.

        • my god, does Izzo have to put on the crying, pouty baby face every time a call goes against MSU?!
          Annoying AF.

Last 10 minutes of the 1st half was excellent for M.

            • How could they not call a foul on Poole's shot?

              Fuck this shit

              • referees decide the game again.

Matt McQuaid meanwhile will get free throws on his way to the postgame interview.

                  • Sparty scored 42 in the 2nd half, lots of 2nd chance points. Teske kept getting mugged underneath the basket, Poole took a lot of bad shots as usual and Matthews put up a 0... Just double checked, he scored a bucket i didn't see. He's leaving early to get a paycheck, hopefully it's with his M degree and not his basketball skills.

                    • MSU going 3-0 vs M in the last couple weeks really, really sucks.
The way M has blown these games too... combination of stale offensive possessions with little ball movement, mental toughness, and these ref calls.

Fucking McQuaid/ Hancock/ DiVenceno shit too.

                      • Killer call on the OOB decision. That was not indisputable. Whatever.

The game was lost in the second half with hurried, crappy shots taken by M. Beilein saw the bad shot decisions, talked about it at a time out. Went OK for two possessions then crap shots returned.

A bit of choking by M as MSU closed the gap and tied the game.

Congrats to MasSpartan. MSU the better team in the second half mentally...... repeat, rinse and repeat.

                        • Also helps when you can intentionally grab a 3 point shooter and not get called for it.

                            • McQuade throws himself into Poole and gets 3 FTs....that sure felt like a turning point to me.

Watch Michigan get like 3 or 4 seed now.

                              • This team is missing a piece, MAAR instead of Charles Matthews would be a huge upgrade.
