        • Shea Patterson was the #1 ranked dual threat QB in the 2015 class.

If he comes to Ann Arbor, and that's a big IF IMO, I'd see JH finding and then using Patterson like Saban used Jalen Hurts.

The only difference right now between M/Wisky/Stanford pro-style, power offenses and the hybrids (e.g., osu, Clemson, OU and more) is the emphasis on the pure drop back PA as a big play threat v. the big play potential of a QB that has to be accounted for as a runner. A dual threat QB adds a whole range of RPO plays that a pro-style QB really has no capacity to realistically add to the play book.

With a QB like Patterson, I don't think M will stray away from it's base bread and butter power running plays or the big play PA. M isn't going to become Oregon. Adding a dual threat QB simply expands the play book a bit and makes opponents have to plan to defend one more threat.

I also don't see Patterson in Harbaughffense a whole lot differently than I see a guy like Milton. Peters? McCaffrey? There is a difference. If I recall, Saban worked Hurts in gradually to his offense and when Hurts proved he was more effective than, was it Blake Barnett (?), Hurts won the job and Saban simply expanded the offense to take advantage of what Hurts offers.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

          • Shea is a better passer than Jalen Hurts, but Hurts is a much better runner. I think fits JH's style better, anyway.

            • If he was the #1 at anything then I have little doubt that he ended up at Ole Miss as the result of payola. If Ole Miss is in trouble for that then we had better be careful about whether or not we take him.

Yes. JH won't be Chip Kelley, but a bit of that added to the mix would be great. Clearly we aren't going to be giving up on the basic power running/play-action downfield combination. That's core.

Shea's dad is a fire chief at a small town fire dept in Louisiana and his older brother works at Ole Miss. I think Hugh Freezes scheme fit his skill set well and LSU was in a bit of turmoil. Never heard any rumors of anything dirty with him, but I have been wrong before.

                  • Lucky break for Ole Miss then?

It just seems so unlikely and hoooo boy did Ole Miss pull in some unlikely 5* recruits in a few years.

I guess so. Only logical explanation.

No doubt. Tunsil, Moncrief and plenty of talk about a few others, too. Patterson? None that I am aware of. It's possible, though.

                        • Michael Spath talks some common sense. Good commentary starting at 20:00.

                          • Re the interview with Spath: Of course 8-4 is unacceptable but the reality of JOK at QB is simply ignored in what Spath suggests could have been marquee wins v. Wisconsin and osu.

Those were not going to happen given the QB situation. This is pretty simple. 8-4 in 2017 is due to three easily identifiable factors: OL play and QB play are primary. I'd add S play as well but to a lesser extent.

Nothing else Spath suggests (processing out players who would have been seniors or will be seniors/have experience) have meaning relative to 2017 or going forward for that matter. End of story.

So, its a duhhhh that CFB teams are going to have to win with young players given the current NFL landscape. I think JH understands this and hence cleans out the dead wood for talented youth. It's roster management on the back end. Do it.

Peters has potential. OL and S play will improve based on experience. That there are rumors that Shea Patterson might join the roster suggests JH understands what happened to M in 2017 regarding QB play. Speight's and now Malzone's transfers suggest that further. Dead wood. Peters needs competition. I hope Patterson becomes a reality for that reason alone let alone that he could very well start adding another dimension to M's offense.

I'm totally onboard for high expectations for 2018. I agree with Spath here. While the schedule is difficult with road games v. ND, MSU and osu, what's happening on the rosters with all those teams favors M's emerging skill sets obtained in every unit. Downward trending outlooks for ND and level trends for MSU and osu - teams M would have beaten with just average QB play in 2017 - encourage positive outlooks even though they are road games.

I agree with Spath here. M has to win those games on the road to solidify Harbaugh's and M's appeal to talented HS players and continue to ramp the program's capacity to overtake osu on a talent and coaching basis as comparative measures of that team. If M can't do that for whatever reasons, I think M will remain a third tier program in the BT and nationally under Harbaugh increasing the likelihood he'll return to the NFL.

2018 is big for a lot reasons and I think Harbaugh knows this.

                            • Some issues at LB too that should improve with more experience, better athletes.

That's a big one. Mike McCray's been a great player in a lot of ways, but it seems to me that every LB in the forseeable future will be much faster. This year's defense had three spots to attack: McCray, Kinnell, Metellus. Does Ole Miss have any great safeties? I'm sure Metellus and Kinnell will be better next year as returning starters, so I'm not seeing this as a huge massive hole, but neither one played well enough to be considered a lock next year.
