An above average QB gets Michigan to the playoffs each of the past two seasons IMO. Really, five of their seven losses over the last 2 seasons have come down to horrible QB play weighing them down like an anchor. It’s eaaily the biggest common denominator in the failures of 16 and 17.Last edited by Kstat; November 27, 2017, 08:57 AM.

I think two possibilities existed for Wilton with the first being the most probable: (1) M may have been unwilling to play Speight given the nature of his injury. We really do not know it's extent. (2) Wilton looked at the QB situation/Roster and talked it over with JH and decided to move on.Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. This is a pretty good diary entry from mgoblog.
It compares JH to meyer, Franklin and Dantonio in terms of W/L records, Margins of victory in wins and losses and other factors.
Concludes that JH is as good as or better than Dantonio or Franklin but not as good as meyer. That's because osu has the talent, not to mention meyer is by history a very good coach and recruiter.
Downward trend in 2017 offense and 1-5 v. MSU and osu is concerning but with reasonable explanations (OL and QB play in 2017 and shit happens in 2016). 2018 is an important year for appearances. Another 8-4 season will set recruiting back and create an extended period for M to catch-up to osu.

Of those 5 losses though, 1 was a total fluke and 3 of the other 4 were QB meltdowns. It’s not like there were major scheme or talent issues in those games. M simply had a much, much, muuuuch worse QB than the opponent. Harbaugh at least now has a QB he himself recruited and developed out of HS, not a transfer and not a Brady Hoke reject. He doesn’t get a pass anymore. Agree totally that QB issues from here on out are on him.

It's being reported that Joe Milton is enrolling early at M.
Some speculation that this is tied to the Speight transfer news.
Milton has huge upside potential from what I've read about him. Has anyone here seen him play? He's got impressive numbers.
Really doesn't change anything for 2018 but does improve his chances for physical development and familiarity with JH's play book.
I'm thinking that all the talk of Peters not being ready was really a staff decision that involved things like not wanting to play him at all in 2017, keeping his red-shirt status. But their hand got forced after O'Korn wasn't getting the job done. I could be wrong about this because I don't fully understand what impact on the QB rotation keeping Peter's red-shirt would have and what taking it from him this season impacts QB rotation going forward, i.e., beyond 2020.Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. It'll be Peters or McCaffrey next season at QB. Third year you should be ready, Peters should be an improvement from what we had this season. McCaffrey hopefully can compete and be a solid backup, Malzone is likely at best a career backup which we kinda knew when he committed...
Still need offensive tackles who can pass protect.

Didn't Peters already have his redshirt year last year?
Of all the things floating about out there, I think there are some fair criticisms and some unfair ones.
FAIR:
1. Peters needed to get in there earlier.
2. The safeties/repeated burning of Metellus -- Brian pointed out on the podcast that since they had 3 solid corners, in Watson, Hill and Long, and since Hill is pretty good in run coverage, he should have been out there for quite a few obvious-passing-down snaps in Metellus' place. What you gain in pass coverage is greater than what you lose in size/strength to cover the bigger guys. Metellus is certainly built tougher and can probably hit much harder, but he was targeted over and over and it always worked. Safeties are a concern for next year.
UNFAIR
1. Don Brown and blitzing -- he wasn't sending the house and getting beaten.
2. Pep Hamilton: I don't know why people are pining for Fisch. Hamilton didn't have Darboh and Chesson and Rudock and last year's Speight. I don't think it matters all that much, either, unless we know for a fact that the passing-game coordinator job is responsible for pass protection. Neither Fisch nor Hamilton were responsible for Pepcat, presumably, or the awful run game until October. IMO there is a good discussion to be had, on the other hand, about one of Frey or Drevno, and about the division of responsibility between those two, the passing-game coordinator and the head coach. There's still too many chefs.
3. Rivalry games. It looked to me like the game plan was pretty darn good. This would have been a very impressive smoke/mirrors win. I hate 1-5 so far, and this year's MSU loss is entirely on JH, and it would have been nice to not get royally screwed in Columbus last year, but there are brighter days ahead.

Did you read the article and understand the criteria?
The measures he used are not fool-proof and the writer acknowledges that. But by the analysis he does, the conclusion he comes to is reasonable.
I'm fine with your disagreement if you can show the holes in the analysis and by what measures you might offer to compaer the coaches.Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished.
