DSL,
Yeah, I watched this ASG live, and it was no doubt a goon play by Rose (considering the game it was in), but…
-Back then, if a catcher blocked the plate, it wasn’t just “legal” to blow up the catcher, it was expected.
-Fosse was blocking the plate without the ball.
-Fosse himself never blamed Rose, noting the above fact.
-Fosse didn’t miss a game as a result of the collision iirc and played 9 more years. Rose, incidentally, DID have a few days off.
So, who do I personally blame more for this? Rose, of course, but some baseball people (especially younger ones) have wrongly turned this into something equivalent to the Rape of Nanjing.
And my final word on this is it’s viewed worse because after the collision, Rose kinda stood over Fosse and jawed with him. If he had just walked back to the dugout or feigned concern, it would be viewed differently."The problem with quotes on the Internet is that it is sometimes hard to verify their authenticity." -Abraham Lincoln

Plus back then the All-Star game was a much more competitive affair. Those guys really were playing for bragging rights and wanted to win that game. It was bottom of the 12th at the brand new Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati and the hometown hero was barreling down third base line with the winning run. I would imagine any other player would have plowed the catcher 100 out of 100 times in that scenario too. Rose actually started to do a head first slide but then noticed Fosse was blocking the plate and pulled up and ran him over instead.
When I first heard about this play years ago I thought it ended Fosse's career. Dude played another 8 seasons in MLB. It's a totally overblown event.

Kris Kristofersen was way more communist that than the detestable Fosse. I mean, I think he probably cried when the Wall came down. But, Fosse was only a decent catcher who couldn't write a song to save his life. So, fuck him.Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?
Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.
