It’s late August. Time for the Braves patented late-season spiral. Time to admit that despite the gaudy record, our pitching just isn’t where it needs to be. I’ve never seen anything like our pitching roster injury woes. Losing Soroka, last year and into this, as well as Kyle Wright, Dylan Lee, Jesse Chavez, Tyler Matzek, Ian Anderson (Tommy John), Nick Anderson and then a host of bit pitchers: Ynoa, Burkhalter, Cole Phillips, Adam Maier, JR Ritchie (Tommy John), Kolby Allard, Brooks Wilson, Daysbel Hernandez, and Chirinos.
It’s ridiculous.

And the jinx talk with any mention of baseball has run its course. It’s already left the station of mildly amusing and arrived at prosaic, and is quickly heading to tedious.
Do better.

1. The Oakland A’s are the first team to be mathematically eliminated from the postseason.
2. The Yankees’ slide continues. They are still the only AL East team with a losing record and a -RD. The Yanks are 2-8 over the last 10. They are 19 games back. “The Yankees of the NL,” the Cardinals, are in the same boat. The Cards are 2-8 over the last 10 and 16.5 GB in the NL Central.
3. The Twins are still the lone AL Central team with a winning record and a +RD. The Guardians continue to regress. They are now 6 back and 3-7 over the last 10.
4. Division races. The AL West now has three teams fighting. The Mariners and Rangers are now tied and the Astros are just 1 game back (the Mariners have the best record in baseball over the last 10). The Rays are 3 GB behind the Orioles, and the Cubs and Reds still have a shot a catching the Brewers in the NL Central.
5. Various stat leaders: Stolen Bases: Acuna (59); OPS: Ohtani (1.083); Hits: Freeman (172); WAR: Betts (7.1); RBIs: Olson 112.
