Its not the area around Comerica that concerns me. Detroit cops police that area pretty well whenever the Tigers or Lions are playing. Its driving THRU certain areas before and after that make me a bit nervous. Even in the daytime. Whenever I leave that area and I get on I-96, I set my cruise on 80 and I don't stop for anything until I'm past Brighton.

Yeah that's my experience back when I went to a game there...

It wasn't always that way. Used to be, as long as you minded your own beeswax, you could go into Detroit, take in a game, (even at night) and be fairly safe. In order to find trouble, you had to go looking for it. We used to go to the HS football championships at Ford Field and make a whole day of it. We'd go eat lunch down in Greektown (Pegasus is the best!) and then come back to Ford Field for the night session. Nobody ever bothered us. My officiating buddies and I took day trips to Greektown Casino and stayed all day. Never a problem coming or going.

But in today's world? Sheesh .. people are getting shot just because they LOOK like a cop. Seven Mile is basically a "no go" zone. Don't go there. For anything.

            • The game I went to was over 20 years ago...we had some lunch and beers before the game at Hockeytown and walked over to Comerica for an afternoon game...was a pretty uneventful day until I left to get back to my hotel up in Troy...I got turned around and had to stop and ask for directions and had to pee like a racehorse...was right at dusk...the gas station attendant told me directions...advised me to not pee and delay my exit and to get my cracker ass back on the freeway. I did that and peed into a Snapple bottle on the way back. That was the infamous game I went to with Entropy and MojoSpartan. I'm not sure what was scarier...going to a game with those two meatheads or my exit...

              • I've never had a problem at a night game at Comerica.

                • Wiz,

Is the rumor that mojo helped you aim into the Snapple bottle true?

                  • 7 mile and downtown Detroit are not synonous so it's dumb to act like it is.

                      Hearsay. I move to strike.

                      • I stayed at the Westin/Book Caddy in Detroit for a conference a couple of years ago. The only crime I saw was charging $18 for a modest pour of Maker’s Mark.

LOL. I think that gas station attendtant was having some fun with you.

I lived in three different places in Detroit when I was there.

Cathedral Towers (one block south of Warren/Woodward or John R)

MLK Arms (MLK and Second a block east of Cass)

John R Apartments (one block over from Woodward about 3-4 blocks north of Comerica Park)

Can't remember the number of times I would walk up Woodward (by myself) real late at night. There are places you stay out of late at night but that is true in every big city. Downtown Detroit I would say now up to the LCA is fine. Then you have a few blocks of nothing until you reach the DSO/Midtown/ Wayne State Area (I think there is an MSU extension building and maybe a whole foods before you hit the DSO area).

Hell---I am hoping I can swing it next year and afford to go to the NFL Draft in Detroit that would be a blast.

                            • In the downtown area of Detroit, especially when any special event is going on,(Fox Theatre, :Little Caesars, Comerica, Ford Field, et al) the cops are out in force. The Ilitch family and the Ford family have told the city that if they want continued big bucks poured into those areas, they better protect the people that come to those venues. So, the Detroit Police do just that. They're visible, and for the most part, I'll agree its fairly safe. Maybe one day I'll get past my unreasonable fears and take in a night event in the area. But, my preference is to go in the daytime.

But the areas surrounding downtown, and some of the routes that fans have to drive thru to get there, can be, and have been very dangerous.

Well if you are taking 96 down for the most part which probably means you are on Michigan Avenue at some point. Once you get past Corktown it is a lot of not much out that way. Lots of office buildings out that way. I still think Nemo's does a shuttle there and back though. Taking one there and back would cut down on parking and might give you easier out after the game.
