  • Since 1975, the AL has spent nearly a billion more dollars on payroll than the NL. Many people besides myself (John Thorn, for example), think keeping up with the Yankees is a reason.

But evidence is circumstantial and Alabama is playing a trap game in a hurricane today, so I will concede the point.

    • The Yankees have built in advantages due to being in NYC. The fan base is massive, probably bigger than any other in MLB. Their local radio and television money, along with what they get from the national networks, pays pretty much all the bills for the organization, including player salaries. Gate receipts, concessions and memorabilia are all icing on the cake. I think those advantages leave fans from other teams a bit jealous. The Yankees seem to carry an aura of entitlement, because 'they are the Yankees", and all that. Just ask folks from Boston.

I lived in NYC for about 2 1/2 years when I served in the USCG, and I admit, I followed the Yankees. I was there when Reggie Jackson won the WS for them by hitting 3 home runs in the same game. I admit, it was impressive. The folks around where I lived went nuts. But when I got out of the service, I returned to being a skeptical and long suffering Tiger fan.

I still haven't forgiven the Tigers for trading Smoltz and Avery.

                    • The problem is pitching. We need to win tomorrow night, too. Ian should be fine. Still not sold on Wright. And game 4, who? Tomlin? AJ?

                          • 61/67 scoreless innings pitched by the Braves in the post season. Last night was way more dramatic than it needed to be, though.

If Wright can somehow win tonight (and I’m not counting on it), we could start Fried again game 6, and Ian game 7 and have a real chance to win one of them.

In the ALCS, the Rays look unbeatable.

                            • And for those who didn’t watch last night: Braves up 8-3 in the bottom of the 9th. We bring in Tomlin and he gives up 3 runs on three pitches. Used AJ and Day, too. I have no idea who will be the game 4 starter. Pitching by committee, no doubt.

                              • And I would love a day off in this stretch. Miss the old travel day, especially considering how incredibly thin Braves SP is.
