  • I don't worry about the length of football or basketball games, either pro or college. I just DVR the games and cut out the commercial breaks and halftime. In pro football, if you have a 30-second forward function, that is about the time between plays.

Baseball is different because the gaps between action are not of a similar length.

Also, in baseball, when a batter has a 9 pitch at-bat there is praise all around by the manager and the broadcasters. Also praiseworthy is the ability to "spoil" the pitches until the batter gets one he can hit for a home run. And the core of the length-of-game issue is that baseball has gone with livelier balls that make the hr attainable by most batters. Go back to the "old" ball and maybe we could have action like stolen bases and bunts. I wouldn't mind watching if something other than 8-pitch strikeouts were happening.

    • I have a friend that DVRs a lot of games and watches them later. I can fuck up his entire day by texting him a score. Ha!

I won't bother DVRing a game to watch later. I may pause one for a while, but I always try to get caught back up as soon as I can. The game just doesn't interest me if I know it is already over.

Ha! Just because I could doesn't mean that I do.

No need to wait until later to watch it. If two interesting games come on at 1:00 pm, then tape both. Wait 15 minutes and start watching game 1. In 22 minutes or so you are back to real-time and then you go to game 2. When you get to real-time with that one (by cutting out commercials) you go back to game 1.

            • The implementation of a strict pitch clock in the minor leagues has shaved 20 minutes off game times while not having a demonstrable effect on scoring, setting the stage for Major League Baseball to implement a clock in 2023.

                • I plan to use that 20 minutes to write the great American novel. Or cure cancer. Maybe both.

That 20 minutes is very important. VERY.

I hardly even drink anymore. It’s just fixing a problem that isn’t a problem imo. But whatever. If it keeps the ADHD crowd from whining for a week or two, I guess it’s worthwhile.

                        • Cabrera is 3 for 3 heading to the 7th. Now up to 2,999 career hits. AND he just scored from 1st on a 2-out double in the 6th.

                          • Perspective:

There are 6 players in the history of MLB who have collected both 3,000+ hits and 500+ homeruns. With his next hit, Miguel Cabrera will become the 7th.

If you add one more milestone: .300+ career batting average, that list is reduced to two players: Hank Aaron and Willie Mays. Miguel Cabrera will join them with his next hit.

And he will join another group of three with his next double. 3000+500+600

                              • I saw he was sitting at 599 doubles but didn't know how that fit into career ranks. Would be cool if that's hit # 3,000.
