To my backward thinking, even though an act may be 'within the rules' doesn't mean you do it.
If Rose was trying to score, and was going for the plate, and Fosse was hit in the process, then there'd be no gripe.
But, his intent was to hit Fosse as hard as he could, which he did, and then find a way to touch the plate. There was intent behind Rose's hit, and he did what he intended to do, and that was to seriously injure Fosse.
In the clinics I attended as an umpire, we classified contact on the bases and at home in two categories:
1, A Wreck: This is where we have a defensive player with the ball going after a runner, and the runner is going for the base. They hit, and we have arms, legs, and dirt flying. That's a wreck, and its a legitimate action of the game. We have nothing as far as actions against either player.
2. A Collision: This is what Rose did. The intent was to collide with the defensive player, and cause him to lose control of the ball. The intent is NOT to get to the base, but rather to hit the opposing player. For this act, players can be ejected.
I have no problem with a clean play were both players are attempting to make a play. I have no respect for any player that attempts to injure another. That's what Rose did to Fosse.
He's not worthy to be in the HOF. He's a disgusting, lying piece of crap. I don't care if he had a million hits.
