“The ability to play chess is the sign of a gentleman. The ability to play chess well is the sign of a wasted life.” — Coach Paul Bear MorphyDan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?

Morphy had severe depression, which isn’t that uncommon with genius. He was the best player in the world and just walked away from chess, content to start his law practice but his chess fame followed him and his law practice never took off. Depression progressed into severe mental illness.
His death (which I always have believed was suicide) was way too early. A sad tale indeed."The problem with quotes on the Internet is that it is sometimes hard to verify their authenticity." -Abraham Lincoln

Just saw a video clip of Joel Klatt interviewing Ryan Day. He was asked about the on-field rule change he’d like to see. Klatt, of course, said that he thought Day would say something about targeting, but Day said “too soon” and went with hash marks instead. That in college they are too wide and need to mirror the NFL now. That the college hash marks are from a bygone era.
I think he has a point. The hashmarks in college do give the offense a big advantage (except kickers) and mirroring the NFL on this is probably needed. Saban, Dabo, and Harbaugh have said something about this in years past. Wonder why it’s not ever talked about (that I’m aware of).
Wiz, thoughts? Have you heard any discussion in meetings?"The problem with quotes on the Internet is that it is sometimes hard to verify their authenticity." -Abraham Lincoln

I think even the small schools restripe their fields every year. Doesn’t look like that would be a huge thing for them. Some green spray “cover up” for the faded old marks and restripe it with the new marks.
On a side note: As much as I hate the current targeting rules, that bullshit is here to stay."The problem with quotes on the Internet is that it is sometimes hard to verify their authenticity." -Abraham Lincoln

Safety issues are just going to continue to get more over the top. As far as the hashmarks...for the big schools it's not an issue. They don't "restripe" per se...those are interwoven into the Field Turf or whatever artificial surface they have. On grass fields the hash marks are dug in as well as striped. The issues are more for the smaller NCAA schools. I'm not seeing a groundswell for this change though. I know in 1991 when the NCAA narrowed the goalposts to NFL width it wasn't a big thing at the big schools...but replacing goalposts was a big deal for the small institutions...plus many small college fields double as HS fields...where the posts are still wider. Lots to consider when physical changes are recommended.Shut the fuck up Donny!

Yeah, it would be harder/more expensive probably on artificial.
Alabama has natural grass and we put new grass in every year. It would be really easy for us.
And honestly, the expense doesn’t seem like it would be that much. I think just starting it with the 133 D1 schools and going from there.
I’m putting you in charge of making this happen. I want a report on my desk by close of business today.
