In Michigan, people are M fans by default. The only way they become MSU fans is if they have some ties to the university. If a person attended or has relatives who attended they become fans of MSU. If not, M gets the loyalty.
It is the same in Alabama. Alabama is the default, Auburn fandom requires a tie to the school.
