No it isn't. It's not reasonable. His sons are absolutely not at risk.

    • Hannibal,

His boys would absolutely be at a higher risk on a team and playing games than they would be taking on-line classes and sequestered at home.

It’s not a real concern I share, but whatever. What protections and life he wants for his boys is none of my concern. Couldn’t care less if he advocates gluing an N95 mask on them, covering them in bubble wrap, and locking them in the basement. Bully for him and his fear of his loved ones contracting Covid-19.

      • It was a short reply to the question Rece asked everyone. It wasn’t some virtue-signaling sermon, imo.

Just wasn’t a big deal at all.

        • Dude, stop defending this idiocy. Playing football for his sons would increase their risk factor from 0 in 10 million to 1 in 10 million, at which point they are much more likely to suffer from suicide or a drug overdose. If Desmond thinks that his sons are legitimately better off living in a bubble now then they should be living in a bubble forever. It might not be your business to tell wacko or ignorant parents how to parent their children, but it's still unreasonable.

Also: context -- these people are supposed to be rooting for sports and ESPN, on the whole, appears to be rooting against. I sense no joy in anybody in the sorts media other than the Outkick guys that football is back.

          • Hannibal,

This will be my last words to you on this because I am repeating myself: His statement was no big deal. At all. It was muted, lacking wild hyperbole, and there was no teeth-gnashing or hand-wringing. The whole segment with each offering their opinions maybe lasted 5 minutes. With regard to Covid, politics, sports, and religion I generally like listening to opinions that differ from mine. I know what I believe and do not need to shield my ears from dissenting opinions. Likewise, I know what I believe and do not need an echo chamber of my own viewpoints.

All-in-all, it was a nice production, with a recap of most of the decent teams who are playing this season, which is what I was there for. Also, both teams I wagered on are covering right now. Banner day.

I was happy to watch it and will probably do so again next Saturday.

            • Let's go back to the article that I provided a link to here by Jason Whitlock that castigated pro-sports teams, their owners and the involved leagues for pandering to the BLM movement after the several incidents involving the death of blacks at the hands of police. He opined that American sports - representative of core American values - had been co-opted by various elements who wished to destroy that. He named several prominent players who took up the banner of dissent and soundly and eloquently criticised the role they fashioned for themselves by doing this and the impact on youth that idolized them. He warned, and IMO correctly so, that they are being played by both internal and external elements that have anarchist and anti-American objectives hugely dangerous to the American way of life.

I hold Desmond Howard and the rest of the ESPN crew to that same standard. People listen to ESPN - as useless as that entire lash-up has become - kids, listen, parents listen and here we have Desmond saying, yeah, too dangerous for my kids to play. Howard is a fucking CFB role model and hero and here he is, on national TV messaging shit that is factually incorrect. GTFO.

              • ?

Holy smokes. He just (essentially) said he would want his kids to opt out. It’s his opinion. There are a lot of things that are said that we can get worked up about. This ain’t one of them in my book. Not by a long shot.

                          • Tennessee has to cancel practice because of 40+ players who have been in contact with a positive person. They don’t have 40 who have tested positive, but, rather, they have just been close to someone who has. This policy will be problematic.

                              • If the contact is a confirmed positive (we don't know what the confirmation protocol that was followed by the Vols) then the 40+ players would be required to self isolate for 14d per CDC guidelines. Things we don't know that would be nice to know:

What test was administered to the allegedly COVID positive person? Any of the available rapid tests should be confirmed with a diagnostic molecular test (RT-PCR); I'd argue you need a second confirmatory test regardless of the type test used if you are going to direct 2 weeks of self quarantine.

Were all 40+ Vol players in contact with the positive person under these conditions: within 6 feet for longer than 15 minutes with high transmission risk activities (singing, talking, etc)?

We may not be getting the entire story either and Tennessee has a protocol including all this stuff and they are following it. It should be no surprise that if the news were leaked to the press, the press will be all over it without vetting the story correctly. My take is that is exactly what happened. If there was an official announcement those details would have been covered.
