  • He got hurt in the 2nd game. Sounds like he's in the mix to play this weekend against Florida.

    • Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin, who served as offensive coordinator at Alabama under Nick Saban from 2014 to '16, said on Wednesday that the No. 1 Crimson Tide are gaining another competitive edge through the transfer portal.

      • Yeah, this (the transfer portal thing) is going to have to be addressed as a means of maintaining competitive equality within at least a segment of CFB teams, conference realignment being a part of the solution. But, the problem in three or four teams attracting the the top talent and then dominating CFB with it is a lot like Pro-baseball's problem when the Yankees among others who could pay top dollar to acquire players and build dominant teams.

It's not so much teams like Alabama being able to "pay" players - greatly over-rated as a recruiting tool - as it is the lure of reputation and now NIL. It's a rich get richer proposition now based on a different set of incentives rather than the big payroll teams of baseball's past. It's similar though and, it seems to me that conference commissioners (however the organizations of CFB actually plays out in the next couple of years) is going to have to deal with to keep CFB competitive across a larger number of teams.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

        • We have lost 5.7 times more players via the Portal than we have gotten. No one talks about that. Or wants to. They just know that we have gotten a few in.

Does Saban, to the best of his ability, try to maximize improvement under the confines of new and existing rules. Sure. It’s what he’s paid for.

And the article about Kiffin not wanting the media to report that this Bama team is not that good is fucking hilarious. Yeah. Of course he doesn’t want the media to motivate them.

          • The portal is, ultimately, a leveler. The elite talent teams can't keep all their elite talent happy. QBs, especially, are going to transfer to better opportunities.

It just so happened that JaMo, who is probaby a 2nd day NFL WR, was stuck on the one roster where his playing time might not have been what he wanted. He happaned to trade up, but in almost any other circumstance some other lesser program picks up a stud WR.
Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?
            Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.

Good point ..... however, you're still getting a shit ton of 5* talent concentrated in a few teams. Sure, the coaches job is to optimize his roster - I've got no bones to pick with Kirby, Davo or Nick. So, yeah there's some sifting going on with the high talent players getting more or less ranked with roster management being a prime mover in the sifting.

What's the quality of the guys that you have gotten in compared to the ones that have left? If other teams get your castoffs and you get the studs who flew under the radar at other places, then it's a big win for you. This is especially true of a program that wants to actively shed its non performers and replace them with new recruits. Historically, you've had to eat those scholarships.

Sure they can. They can keep them happy by paying them ungodly amounts of money to sit the bench, which is no longer against the rules. OSU can compete with Alabama in this regard, but Texas Tech sure can't.

                • Remember, all we have are 6-stars. Just ask anyone.

Our 2 most notable portals and xfers out would be Jalen Hurts and Alvin Kamara several years back. The infamous Mo Smith case. Blake to Arizona. Etc. I don’t really keep up with them too much when the leave.

This year, Robinson with Texas and a South Florida back. Meh.

The biggest xfers in have been Landon last year and Coker a few before that from FSU. Henry this year. The Ohio State kid. Not a ton of difference makers traditionally.

                          • I’m wrong about what I said about Arkansas hiring Sam Pittman as HC a few years ago. Good hire for them… especially if they win today.

So if a program hires what seems like an underwhelming, boring, or unknown HC in the future … Take note of Sam Pittman.

                            • Pittman is a good coach. His longterm success in the SEC will start with recruiting. If he’s able to get the talent, he’ll win.
