  • And, FWIW, I attended both games. The Sam Cunningham goes wild game at Legion Field in 1970 and the first Wishbone game in 1971 where we beat the Trojans at the Coliseum and watched Bama RB Johnny Musso run wild (the first Italian Stallion, and who Stallone reportedly borrowed the name from).

Woody Hayes had a period like that too in the late 50's. He had his first losing season in 1959 and there were calls for him to be axed, despite winning national titles in '54 and '57.

Yeah. Bama was stagnant. He had to do something. He did and reinvented the ethos of his teams. Er, I mean Sam Cunningham did.

        • Random question popped in my head....who's the oldest living coach to win a national title? Got to be either Osborne or Switzer right? Now with Bowden gone.

I believe Gene Stallings is older than both.

Oops, looks like it might be Vince Dooley instead. He's 89. I'm ashamed to admit I didn't realize he was still alive.

              • Dooley then Stallings, I guess.

Good call. I forgot about Stallings too, cuz he did his at a relatively late age. And how could I overlook Lou Holthz

                  Dooley: 89
                  Stallings: 86
                  Holtz 84
                  Osborne: 84
                  Switzer: 83

                  • Should Stallings count since Miami rolled over like a cheap rented Grand Canyon mule?
                    Shut the fuck up Donny!

Miami straight-up got punched in the mouth and didn’t know what to do.

                        • It was a whole championship. Yours was a runner up. Just be lucky you could hide in the Doze Bowl. Hell FSU and Tennessee were both better than M in 1997.

                            Now there you go again.

I was simply pointing out that Dr. Tom had another half championship that deserved mentioning, and now you get all huffy ...

And really? You use Tennessee and FSU to strengthen an arguement against Michigan?

                            so sad
