  • It's no Legion Field.

    • True. Legion Field was a decent venue in the early-70’s and before. Fell into disrepair and Bham leadership wouldn’t put money in it. Also, it’s smack dab in the middle of housing projects and gang violence. So, yeah.

True ...... if you like Stalinist architecture of the late 30s- 40s. Definite resemblance in style .......

Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

            • I’ve never understood the Gay Bear sass. He wasn’t gay, but if he were, I wouldn’t give 2 shits. That sass misses its mark.

Now, if you said he only made or ate instant grits and biscuits out of a can, I would drive to Ogallala and kick your plastic hip-having ass. Gay? Meh. Never cared about that.

              • Alabama-Tuscaloosa's antebellum revival campus, an architectural marvel in the same sense as Caesar's Palace or the French pavilion at Epcot Center, cannot hold a candle to dear Cornell.

                  • Missed this....Sam Cunningham died on Tuesday. Although he played for USC, he played a big role in Bama history too...even if it's largely mythical (per AA)

USC football great Sam "Bam" Cunningham, who went on to become the New England Patriots' all-time leading rusher, died Tuesday in Inglewood, California. He was 71.

                      • Caught me skimming. Been on vacation. Thought I was being nice by not sticking to the standard narrative of The Bear relenting to integration after watching Cunningham gouge his all-white redneck defense over and over again. No good deed goes unpunished!

I guess history would be different if two things had happened: (1) If Bryant had ALREADY signed two black players before that game was ever played and (2) If Bama had beaten that Trojan team the very next year.

                            Guess we’ll never know, huh?

                              • The fact is the Bama teams of 1967-1970 weren’t very good (28-15-2 those 4 years). It’s hard to believe now, but Bryant wasn’t doing well and some were calling for him to be replaced.

In 1969, he started recruiting black players and by that first game of 1970 against USC he had already signed 2 (Jackson and Mitchell). That year, after losing to integrated USC by 21, they went on to only win 6 games. They lost by 25 to all white Ole Miss, by 24 to Tennessee, by 5 to LSU and Auburn before tying a similarly mediocre Oklahoma in the Bluebonnet Bowl.

In the off-season, he spent time with Darrell Royal at Texas and, with secrecy that the CIA would envy, installed the Wishbone. He ran variations of that offense for a decade.

But, sure, let’s go with “Sam Cunningham got Bryant to recruit blacks.” It makes for a nice SJW narrative and, as you know, Truth takes a backseat to such things.

                                Bah.
