  • Well, it's not work if it's something you love. But I digress.

    • If I put "chainsaw repair" into Google Scholar, autocomplete suggests "College Station''.

I am not kidding. That's what I do.

      • Haha. TAMU!

        You write? Heh. Okay.

        Anyway...

With these full scholarship athletes, their dorm room is paid for as well as their books, tuition, notebooks, pencils, and meals. They even get workout gear (shoes, socks, sweatsuits, shorts, and shirts) that end up also serving as the clothes these kids wear to class.

When you add the incidentals stipend, a student loan or two, and a pell grant (if they qualify), they have decent inflow to be able to get a car. I have a friend with a son who played major college football. He had money saved for his kid's college, but with the schollie, it wasn't needed. He used some of the cash to buy a car for him so no student loan was necessary, and the rest for a vacation to Bermuda for him and his wife. He was giddy about the schollie. And rightfully so.

        • LMAO at AA. I'm sure that the Dasahawn Hands and Najee Harrises of the world had parents socking away huge amounts of money for college that is currently being spent on luxury vehicles that even rich kids at college don't usually drive.

          • Bah. No point in talking about this. There is no "right way" anymore. Complaining about cheating is so 2011. Congrats to Alabama for being elite. I wish that we could join them.

Reading and understanding can be hard. Re-read what I wrote. When you do, I will discuss it with you. Until then, it would be a waste of time.

              • Dashawn Hand is one of the kids in the pictures with a fancy car, so my reference to him is relevant.

Beyond that, I understand exactly what you are saying and I am making fun of it appropriately. You honestly believe that your 5* football players (most of whom don't have a pot to piss in) are buying fancy, expensive luxury cars by using the college money that their parents socked away for them (LMAO) and/or by scrounging together the small amounts of money that they are legally entitled to take. It takes a special kind of gullibility that eclipses "OJ didn't do it". I don't see much of a point in talking about it though. To win big in college football, you cheat. That's just how it goes. I'm tired of seeing complaining about it.

                • Small amounts of money they're "scrounging"?

Up to $20,000 the first year?

I'm trying to think of a car payment a kid couldn't afford with the incidentals+student loan+Pell Grant payouts (and that's with zero cash from mom and dad).

A new Maserati? I guess that would depend on the option package, but you could probably get close. A 5-year-old Yukon would be crazy easy with a lot of cash left over. A used charger would be easy.

At Bama, and most schools now, you have to register your car with compliance and your financials have to be disclosed. Does that mean that a booster hasn't slipped cash to a recruit? Of course not, but Peppers driving a Tahoe at Michigan means nothing. It is proof of nothing. To blindly assert that it does mean something is stupid.

                      • Let's say there is a female college student named Brittany who drives a used BMW. She doesn't play sports, but is on an academic scholarship and she came from a meager background.

Do we accuse her of something bad, absent proof, solely because she has a nice car? Prositution? Having a sugar daddy? Porn? Selling drugs? Would any of us assume the worst simply because of her car? If this were a daughter of one of your friends, would you go up to him and say, "Hey, is your daughter doing something untoward? Is she a call girl? What are her rates?"

                        No, of course not.

Some of this is borne of our cynicism surrounding other teams' college athletics and some of it may be due to covert racism in that it seems it's only the black males we are assuming the worst about. No one said anything about AJ McCarron's SUV or Greg McElroy's brand-new Range Rover, and no one would jump to unsupported conclusions about poor Brittany above.

                        I don't know...

I do know that it's funny that those who assume that the shiny SUV another team's star drives is a payoff, but the shiny SUV his team's star drives is legit.

But I have tired of this. Think what you will. Unless something interesting comes up, I will just mock and take pot shots at my leisure at those jumping to unsupported conclusions.

                        • The cars I see from Bamas football team I'm sure don't resemble anything close to scholarship athletes when I was in school at a University with wealthier parents than Bamas.
