  • I'd like data, too. It's always been my understanding that UM and everybody else (with the exceptions of the academies, NW, Stanford, Duke, ND) goes by the NCAA clearinghouse standard for athlete admissions. Anectodally, I work with a Sparty grad who had classes with Mateen Cleaves. He said that guy can't walk and chew gum at the same time. It was embarrassing to him that Mateen was going to the same school. I reminded him that he probably enjoyed watching Mateen in the Final Four, tho. Yeah, there's that...he said. This idea that many of the athletes we enjoy watching perform would be accepted to the universities we are asscociated with is pure poppycock.

    • I am loath to be in agreement with Talent.

As far as hard data, you won't find much.

      • Schools DO set standards above the clearinghouse. Like I said, we have turned down kids who got into USF and some other similar schools. Those standards are never concrete. My contention is most of the p5 are fairly close. There are some examples, however. It's not a huge issue, though.

Right. We had a 5* guy, Dorsey, from FL that RichRod badly wanted. Admissions said hell no. IIRC, he was basically on the verge of flunking out of HS then miraculously got all As in summer school through an online HS or something. UM wasn't gonna touch him with a 10 foot pole. He ended up flushing out of Louisville after a year.

I don't think there is a significant difference in admissions between UM/OSU and LSU/Bama. The SEC might be willing to take fliers on a few guys per class that Michigan wouldn't but that's only my opinion/educated guess. I know we would have happily given a scholly to Laquan Treadwell or Dashawn Hand.

          • Hand was never an academic risk from what I've heard.

            • I was just using Hand as an example of a player that went to Bama that we would have also accepted. There's a misconception out there that Michigan football players have ACTs of 30 and are all biochem majors, hence it's almost impossible for us to compete with OSU and Bama. The fact of the matter is we'll take the same idiots as any of the other major players with a few exceptions like Dorsey (that are an insignificant number).

                • I don't mean to break conversation but this seems like the right place to discuss. Does anyone else think Peppers is a better running back than DB? I mean, he'd be our best offensive player if he'd play offense.

                  • Last season, he might've been. This upcoming season, he's imo more needed on defense.

                    • Peppers would basically be our best player wherever we decide to put him.

He'd be alot of team's best offensive player.

                      • Wouldn't it be wise to play him on offense then? M's D doesn't need him. He's M's Reggie Bush but he's playing defense.

                        • He's not Reggie Bush. IMO, he's distinctly better on defense especially as a wide side LB against spread teams. He can be a first round pick there. He's not that on offense. At all.

                          Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.

                          • His forte is defense, but he will have a significant impact on the team as an all-purpose player before the season is done.

He doesn't need to line up at tailback or wide receiver to fill a need for Michigan. They've got top-notch players at those positions already.

I'll be shocked if he doesn't have 2-3 punt returns for TD's this year.

                            • He still feels like a novelty/changeup guy on offense. If he went offense fulltime he'd be the best offensive weapon by far, but that is a commitment to removing the best player from the team's weakest unit.

                              • In Michigan Marching Band news, McKenna Thayer, from Hillsdale Michigan will be the band major for the 2016 marching season.

Miss Thayer, a 2013 graduate of Hillsdale High School will be the second woman to be selected as Michigan's band major in the last 15 years.
