Rudock at Iowa was a game manager. Even less than that early in the season for M then did really well over his last five games as a Wolverine though playing Rutgers and Indiana's defenses helped.

Krenzel played CFB at a time when moving the ball at a turtle's pace, scoring at low efficiency rates and protecting a lead with defense (tressel ball) was in vogue.

Times have changed. CFB today, especially at the elite level, is much more explosive, requires big play offenses and efficient scoring. Krenzel types, game managers, playing tressel ball would have trouble winning games in the MAC these days.

Krenzel also played on a team loaded with NFL draft picks. 21 players who played significant roles during that season were drafted, including Krenzel (5th round!). And that doesn't include Maurice Clarett -- I guess he was drafted, too, though...so 22.

And they still needed a small miracle to win at W. Lafayette.

Tressel beat the offensive genius Chip Kelley in his second-to-last year. The offense was mediocre 2001-2004...quite a bit more prolific from 2005-2010. Well, except for the Todd Boeckman Era...though Tressel was no great innovator to be sure

The whole point here is that M's QB in 2016, whoever that is, cannot just be a "game manager."

My view is that you cannot compete at the elite level with a QB like that. Is there anyone watching CFB today that actually believes that's all you need in your QB?

This isn't about how effective a drop back, pro-style QB versus a dual threat guy can be in today's CFB game. It's about the term game manager. Both styles of QBs could be game managers and my point is that if they are that type, your team can do well but it is not going to be good enough to win championships and compete for a play off spot.

To do that not only does your QB have to know the system cold and execute it well but also he has to be able to make big plays when he needs to..... with his feet or with his arm depending on what style of QB you have back there.

In my mind game managers aren't that kind of QB.

talent, I found your pre-The Game - thoughts that you did not reveal until after the osu rout last season to be interesting.

I believe you worried about Rudock actually being a big play guy instead of the game manager everyone pretty much thought he was all season. Sort of like you worried about him coming into his own and looking like the big play Peyton Manning for example when he is on his game and he's had plenty of those in his career.

Did you actually think Rudock had that potential as a pro-style drop back guy? I never saw that in him ...... made some big plays but not consistently enough to be labeled great at play making.

I don't have any confidence in Speight as the starter.

The basis for the idea that Speight is the front runner is that he got the majority of the snaps with the #1s at the Ford Field practice. O'Korn was next and then Morris.

Observers reported that Speight had some nice throws deep and hit all the dink and dunk stuff. O'Korn appeared to not be having a good day but had two long throws that were right on. O'Korn's problem was Grant Newsome at LT Lots of break downs there and O'Korn scrambling around. Speight seemed to have a better pocket but he was also playing against both 1s and 2s on D because of the substitution pace.
