  • My point about Thornton is that he's a transcendent player, and he was quite clearly Plan A for Michigan, and Winston Plan B. Winston looks like a nice get too, no doubt. Are you saying Beilein's backed off Thornton b/c he's a one-and-done? I hadn't seen that. I don't know of any reason why Thornton seems to have gone from highly likely to highly unlikely, so I'm all ears.

    • And for that matter if Beilein would rather 2 years of Winston than one year of Thornton -- if it's that easy to project -- I can see it. He's got a fairly complex system. We've seen this year that you don't just pick it up right away, so I can see the value of continuity. Plus, Walton looks like a four-year guy right now. Even if he comes back a lot better, it's surely going to be very difficult for Beilein to take the ball out of Spike's hands next year.

      • Thorntons said jb hasn't been recruiting him as hard and jb has been at Winstons everything. Dunno if that's because the writing is on the wall with Thornton or vice versa.

          • No NIT bid. They made their own bed. Injuries or not, more talent than MSU and couldn't even make the fuggin NIT. Set up for '16, though. FF or bust. Bring on Camp Sanderson.

            • Too many games where they had late leads and then lost.

Beilein is still a fine coach, and he has a good nucleus of players to work with. Agree with Hack, they should be solid next year.

Who just missed the post season again because his team couldn't beat the New Jersey Institute of Technology or Eastern Michigan.

                • I still won't be too tough on Beilein. Yes, you have to win those games, no excuses allowed. But, I still like the guy, and I think he has the situation under control.

                  • Beilein on Doyle:

“It would be nice if he could make a little 15-footer, because I believe he can. He just didn’t have that many opportunities this year, but that would be good. And then playing where we can throw him the ball down near the box, playing off of him and through him a little bit more. There was times we did that, not enough, and that was part of the issue of passing as well.”

                    • Latest mgoblog:

It's tough to talk Battle without also mentioning Derryck Thornton, the five-star point guard who's looking at many of the same schools, including Michigan and Duke. The Wolverines could be fighting an uphill battle in this one; Thornton is strongly considering a reclassification to the 2015 class, and that would appear to favor the Blue Devils.

I'm glad to see this isn't characterized as an MSU lean:

Per Balas, four-star U of D Jesuit PG Cassius Winston plans to wait at least until he's done with his spring AAU season before making a decision ($). His choice is likely to come down to Michigan and MSU.

Lastly, RECRUIT SOME DAMN CENTERS, BEILEIN. I'M SICK OF HEARING THIS CRAP:

Michigan already has one big man committed to the 2016 class in Ohio four-star Jon Teske. Should they want a second, Beilein's maintained contact with Onsted (MI) center Austin Davis, per GBW's Kyle Bogenschutz. Davis holds five offers, four of them from MAC schools, and has seen several Big Ten programs come through to see him.

                      • The strength of M's team this season was supposed to be its very good, arguably excellent backcourt tandem of Caris LeVert and Derrick Walton. Those two weren't even healthy a lot of the time when they were playing. Those two attributed to turning M into a ~12-6 type B10 team that should get a 7-10 in the NCAA tourney into a team that couldn't manage an NIT bid...

This teams talent was better than I saw early in the season, when I stated this teams talent level easily dropped a couple levels with all the early NBA departures along with graduate Jordan Morgan and post-graduate (?) transfer Jon Horford. Both Irvin and the freshman were much improved later in the season than earlier...

Just one of former two (Morgan, Horford) would've been a huge help in the frontcourt. While Mitch McGary would've been a savior, an All American if healthy that would overshadow Frank Kaminsky if the NCAA allowed him to stay another season if not for their silly rules. Just think of the turn of fortunes if Kaminsky left early last season while McGary stayed... The four spot was a massive black hole created by GR3 mistakenly bolting for the NBA. M's '4' was exploited both when teams went big against M's essential four guard offense or when M put someone like Donnal out there who couldn't compete against B10 caliber PF's, sadly even the 'weaker' B10 PF's exploited M's PF's..

A healthy Caris LeVert would've obviously been a huge help as would've been Derrick Walton and/or Spike, especially in M's countless close games when guys like Irvin, Dawkins weren't terribly comfortably handling the ball for extended periods and saw the offense stall for very extended periods... It wouldn't have taken a whole lot to turn a handful of M's very close losses into wins...

Team progressed significantly in-season as typical JB coached teams do. Development of Irvin, Dawkins and RAAR was significant. Irvin is looking deserving of his 5-star billing, developing his other basketball 'skills', he's an NBA caliber talent as was expected when he signed while Aubrey Dawkins looks on his way to be one of the biggest steals of the '14 recruiting class and has a very, very promising future...

Successful season? Far from it. M experienced both massive attrition to the NBA and significant injuries to their most critical players. Obviously a down season was inevitable given the circumstances.

                          • So -- what are the expectations for next year? What would be considered a disappointment and what would be considered a delight?

                              • With LeVert back I expect to 5 conferences losses maximum, a 2/3 seed, a clear path to the 16s, and a strong chance at the Final Four. Without LeVert add a conference loss, a seed no lower than 4, and still a decent shot at the FF.

But that's without looking at who everyone else has back.
