Yep, losing at a neutral site to a Div 1 team in the NCAA tourney is way worse than losing to a 1 AA team on your home field. Makes perfect sense.

MSU was picked by a lot of experts to win the whole thing. If I recall correctly, Michigan was not even ranked in the top 10 when they lost to Appalachian State. In addition, Appalachian State was a defending national champion in their division, and went on to win yet another national title that year. So they were a little bit better than an average division 2 football team. I don't think anyone has ranked Middle Tennessee as the number one team in college basketball this year."The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, .. App state loss is WAY bigger and has been and will be remembered for a long, long time.
MSU loss to a 15 will be yesterday's news by the time the tourney is over.
It is not even close on the scale. App State was a very good team. Very good. They had some NFL talent that year and won the 1AA National Championship.
BUT. They should have never beaten the #5 ranked traditional powerhouse that was considered by most to be a National Championship contender
It was an embarrassment and was one of the biggest upsets of college football history.

MSU was picked to win the NC by millions and employs one of the top five coaches in the country.
Middle Tennessee State would have a hard time winning the MAC.

App State still lost a couple of games in I-AA. They weren't invincible by that division's standards.
There's just a lot more parity in basketball. It sucks horribly for MSU to lose that game but in the end, it's not going to be too embarrassing. It won't be something that we taunt them about a couple of years from now.Comment

I agree that opposing fans will be bringing up App State v Michigan 10 years from now. In fact, I'll add that there are Michigan fans who will assist in rubbing Michigan's face in that loss 10 years from now. That's sports.
