Yep, losing at a neutral site to a Div 1 team in the NCAA tourney is way worse than losing to a 1 AA team on your home field. Makes perfect sense.

(BTW, both losses are inexcusable and embarrassing)

    • The Appy State loss is worse. 15s have beaten 2s in the tourney before.

      • Next year will be a "win or else" year for both of the two major revenue sports.

        • MSU was picked by a lot of experts to win the whole thing. If I recall correctly, Michigan was not even ranked in the top 10 when they lost to Appalachian State. In addition, Appalachian State was a defending national champion in their division, and went on to win yet another national title that year. So they were a little bit better than an average division 2 football team. I don't think anyone has ranked Middle Tennessee as the number one team in college basketball this year.

            • App state loss is WAY bigger and has been and will be remembered for a long, long time.

MSU loss to a 15 will be yesterday's news by the time the tourney is over.

It is not even close on the scale. Nobody really cares about it beyond people who had their brackets destroyed (and it will quickly be forgotten) and Michigan fans like Liney.

                • I agree that the App State loss was on a whole other level. Much worse.

You spin it your way I'll spin it mine. I am one of only two Michigan fans that believes App State was better than an average Division 3 tomato can.

                    • App State was a very good team. Very good. They had some NFL talent that year and won the 1AA National Championship.

BUT. They should have never beaten the #5 ranked traditional powerhouse that was considered by most to be a National Championship contender

It was an embarrassment and was one of the biggest upsets of college football history.

MSU got beat in tournament that sees similar upsets every year.

                      • MSU was picked to win the NC by millions and employs one of the top five coaches in the country.

Middle Tennessee State would have a hard time winning the MAC.

                          Your argument is invalid.

It is not even close anywhere but in the minds of Michigan fans looking for some validation.

Ten years from now they will still be bringing up the App State/Michigan game. The MSU game will be a footnote.

                          • App State still lost a couple of games in I-AA. They weren't invincible by that division's standards.

There's just a lot more parity in basketball. It sucks horribly for MSU to lose that game but in the end, it's not going to be too embarrassing. It won't be something that we taunt them about a couple of years from now.

                            • They've already moved past it on the national sports talk radio shows. Most or the discussion is on the A+M comeback and Wisconsin buzzer beater.

I can say it too, and it means just as much.

I'm not changing my mind about either game.

I agree that opposing fans will be bringing up App State v Michigan 10 years from now. In fact, I'll add that there are Michigan fans who will assist in rubbing Michigan's face in that loss 10 years from now. That's sports.

I still believe there was more to the story.
