  • Just expand by another 4 and have 72 total with 4 more play-in games. People want more basketball. Give it to them.

    • Hell, send me to the Candidates Tournament in chess because I won the Podunk Falls Tourney. Sure my record is pretty bad against top players but the casuals would love to see it!

Meh. I like a meritocracy - not some tourney where a decent enough portion of it is made up of godless socialist ideals where shitty teams who get hot and win three games in a shitty conference at the end of the year take a spot from a deserving team that has a much more legit claim. It’s un-American!

Well, you can do what you want to me, but I will not stand by and listen to you bad mouth the United States of America!

      Gentlemen!

And here’s the the thing about using Quad wins and NET: it’s not perfect, but it’s a fuckton better than just using the Committee’s “eye test” and having to hope their regional and school affiliation biases don’t poison the selection pool and the seed determination.
There is absolutely no reason that some of the mid-majors from leagues that have had little success cannot be assured spots from 65-72. They would be in, but they would have to play an extra game. Let's say there are four of these. That would allow 4 better teams (from P-6, (Big East is a power conference)) to get at-large bids while still rewarding the minor leagues.

        • The end of the auto bid would kill the small conference tournaments. The charm of those tournaments is win and you are in.

As far as Rutgers goes, they can piss up a rope.

          • I don’t give a shit about the MEAC or SWAC Tourneys (etc) unless they have good teams in them. Otherwise, they can piss up a rope.

But the NCAA includes these teams, why would they vote against their own interests so you can watch the jerks at Rutgers.

I think that filling the brackets with better teams would make the NCAA tournament better. I think better tournaments get more attention and more eyeballs and more dollars. I do not think that 14-21 Texas Southern losing by 21 to FDU while UAB watches from some NIT sideline has the demonstrable positive impact on dollars and eyeballs that some believe it does.

Sure, there might have been a few that pulled for Texas Southern until they got down by double digits shortly after tip off against FDU, but I believe that a good game between FDU and UAB (etc) would have had a more positive effect.

The NCAA allows a conference to decide how their auto-bid is selected. The conferences now give it to the conference tourney winner to help with their own TV and ticket revenue.

                  • Goodness gracious, you are overreacting to Texas Southern getting into the tournament, get a grip.

I like that FDU won a couple games, it's a great story, it brought some pizazz that the jerks at Rutgers wouldn't have. FDU laughed at Purdue's 5 NET rating. That rating isn't worth a hill of beans if you continue to get flustered by a press.

Nope, the most money I spend on college basketball is by attending Horizon League games and under your scheme, they would be shut out of the tournament. Probably every year. No thanks.

                    • Overreacting? Are you daft? Texas Southern is just a prime example of why I do not like the conference tourney auto bid, there are other examples going back years if you want me to compile a list. In the end, if we have to take a SWAC member (or insert another shitty, low-end conference where one of their bottom dwellers took the tourney title) with an auto-bid, there are much better choices in that conference than a very bad, losing team that won three games late. I mean, I know why the conferences choose to give their auto-bid to the tourney winner - because conferences control it and get a bigger cut of the tourney proceeds and TV, but for the life of me, I cannot understand why the casual fans such as yourself romanticize the shitball teams like Texas Southern.

Your scheme diminishes the importance of the season and makes a 3-game weekend the only thing that matters for these lower end conferences.

With regard to UAB-FDU, it would be a much better and more interesting game than Texas Southern-FDU. I’m not sure why anyone other than a TSU alum would prefer them over UAB in that matchup.

Why the UAB hate? The Blazers deserve your respect and your cloying love of Texas Southern makes me sick!

                      • If the conference wants to reward the regular season winner, I wouldn't have an issue with that but under your scheme where you are banishing teams that are have a NET rating over a 100, you are telling the Horizon League to pound sand forever. It's not right. All because Texas Southern won their tournament. No thanks, all 11 universities in the Horizon League say no to you.

                        • UAB was in their tournament and they apparently blew it. They should have won it.

Well, maybe the Horizon needs to follow your general advice for UAB and win more games?

                            • No they have a in with the win the tournament and get it. It's a great rule that has served the tournament greatly over the years as FDU showed. I can see how an Alabama fan doesn't give a crap about the little conferences. That's on brand.
