I don't know that there's anything at all to take away from this year, or until there are no more Covid years. Which, I think, is after next year. The ability to field an instacollection of 23-year-olds is just a now thing.

The calculus of it all is pretty settled recently. For the most part, and the Committee has been fairly consistent, is to award the auto-bids out of mandate and then take the best teams left for at-larges by looking at NET/Quad wins.
To say to P5 team that would have gotten an at-large because of a better NET/Quad than the remaining teams that we’re NOT going to award you a bid because you’re a P5 team so that we can instead award it to a mid-major with a worse NET/Quad is crazy to me.
It’s worse than crazy. It’s goddamn un-American!

It's the portal. I may swing to the big schools, but right now, teams are built quickly with known commodities. These teams are as competitive for one game as a .500 Big Ten or Sec or ACC School. Put 'em in the fucking tourney.
Nobody is advocating to eliminate the auto bids and fuck that quad wins bullshit.I feel like I am watching the destruction of our democracy while my neighbors and friends cheer it on

Nobody? I’m absolutely advocating for eliminating auto-bids or (at the very least putting some qualification criteria to them).
And here’s the the thing about using Quad wins and NET: it’s not perfect, but it’s a fuckton better than just using the Committee’s “eye test” and having to hope their regional and school affiliation biases don’t poison the selection pool and the seed determination."The problem with quotes on the Internet is that it is sometimes hard to verify their authenticity." -Abraham Lincoln

The NET rankings never make much sense anyway. It's explained as if that is what the committee uses to select and seed the teams in the tourney but it never follows. Kansas was #9 in the final regular season NET ranking and were given a 1 seed. St. Mary's was #11 in NET and given a 5 seed. Florida Atlantic was #13 in NET and a NINE seed in the tourney. Kansas St. was #23 in NET and a 3 seed in the tourney. So what' the point of NET?

CGVT,
1) Giving more mid-major at-large spots: The, “Hey, P5 team with a better NET, RPI, SOS, and more Quad 1 wins, we’re giving your spot to a mid-major with a worse NET, RPI, SOS, and fewer Quad 1 wins because…well, fuck you, that’s why! Mid-majors rule!!! Power Five drools!!!1” is a ridiculous. Come on.
2) And re: auto- quals: An 11-18 MAAC team in the tourney with a 300 NET is a nice story until the actual game is played.
3) The sensical thing is to have a fair set of rules as free from biases and insane selection criteria as possible to get the best teams in the tourney.
If you take the view opposite to any of the above, we will never agree and should go our separate basketball convo ways. Also, fuck the fuck off!"The problem with quotes on the Internet is that it is sometimes hard to verify their authenticity." -Abraham Lincoln

Yeah, but you are going to tune in anyway. The thing to remember is no league ever grew when they are kowtowing to the severe traditionalists. Making you happy doesn't reach more viewers. The ratings wouldn't be better if they objectively found the absolute best 64 teams. It's like the people who complain every year about the Super Bowl halftime show , it's not about you! You are the dreaded traditionalist who can't understand why people are tuning out of low scoring 3 1/2 hour baseball games that you enjoy.
This year's tournament has been entertaining. Every once in awhile you might have some rando team that won their tournament to get it only to get blitzed, so what? It's not a big deal. FDU barely got in, didn't win their tournament and won two games. A big story that brought in the casuals. I watch the big ten every year and the big ten gets the most teams in most years. Under you objective unbiased view, they might even get more. Every year the Big Ten underperforms.
If you are team #37 pining for one of the 36 at large bids, you'll be OK when you are denied.

I mean, look at Texas Southern this year at 14-21 who beat Grambling State to win the SWAC tourney. Yikes. Sure, FDU only beat them by 21 in the tourney, but giving that spot to Rutgers, or UNC or UAB, or North Texas or (pick a team) would make the tourney better (to me, anyway). UAB was a better story and a much better team this year than Texas Southern, but the Committee was locked into sending a bid.
That’s one thing I like about NCAA football. Usually the teams in bowls at least have a winning record, and always the teams in the CFP are ranked teams."The problem with quotes on the Internet is that it is sometimes hard to verify their authenticity." -Abraham Lincoln
