  • Gut punch loss. Tough when you have expectations to win.
Turnovers and poor shooting were killer for Purdue.
Ivey’s worst game in a while came at the wrong time.
Credit to Saint Peters. They were gifted 7 key late FTs and made them all (excluding the intentional fouls).
Purdue had two awful scoring droughts in the 2nd half.

Fair to say Matt Painter is like Rick Barnes. Choke when it matters.
Very hard loss as a fan. The opportunity to make a run was better than ever.

    • The fouls toward the end of the game ranged from dubious calls to utterly stupid fouls. The halfcourt offense was, for long stretches, unwatchably bad. They simply could not shoot...AT ALL...in the 2nd half. It wasn't like St. Peter's stopped them from getting good looks at 3s.

      • Yup.

The refs have been atrocious in this tourney, but it was not the reason (turnovers, poor shooting) Purdue lost.
Purdue was up 4 with under 5 minutes left, then:
        - 3 FT points for Saint Peters. Foul a Peacock 3 PT shot.
        - 2 FT points for Saint Peters. Foul on a rebound attempt.
        - 2 FT points for Saint Peters. Foul on a loose ball dive.

So dumb. Between the inability to inbound the ball and boneheaded turnovers. Just terrible basketball play all around for my college basketball teams this year.
I greatly miss the fundamentals of a Beilein team.

        • The last foul on this list -- the dive for a loose ball, happened in a 2-pt game with 2 seconds on the shot clock, It effectively ended the game. That foul was more unlucky than stupid. The foul on the 3 was a terrible basketball play. But, really, none of this should matter too much if Purdue can just shoot a little bit. They missed their first 9 3s of the 2nd half. Of those 9, I'd say at least 6 were open, good shots. Even 1 of those 6 makes a huge difference.

          • They had so many open looks at 3 that looked like crap coming out of their hand.

It's hard to watch games with so many ticky tack fouls that have no impact on the play. College refs are the equivalent of a blowhard dad in the stands shouting 3 seconds at high school game.

                • The most ridiculous segment of the game occured on that shot clock violation, Gene Sterratore is telling us a guy flying into the stands to save a ball somehow established possession. Thankfully they didn't go with his interpretation on the review.

                          • Marty never liked me. He took issue with my commentary of the wrist-slap NCAA punishment Notre Dame received under Holtz. I just wish he would visit so he could read my commentary on how the head coach of Notre Dame killed a kid and did a Costanza-esque, “Was that wrong? Should I not have done that?”
