  • Latest bubble watch (as of 9:10pm 2/28)

    Big Ten

Locks: Michigan, Ohio State, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Purdue

    Should be in

    Rutgers Scarlet Knights

Steve Pikiell's team will finish Big Ten play no worse than 9-11, and, with games remaining at Nebraska and Minnesota, it's possible the Scarlet Knights will better that mark. The team's No. 8 seed in mock brackets and wins over Illinois, Purdue and Maryland and a season sweep of Indiana all say that Rutgers is going to the tournament. Yes, anything can happen, and, no, Bubble Watch doesn't recommend that the Scarlet Knights go 0-2 to end the regular season and then 0-1 in the Big Ten tournament. Nevertheless, this is a stronger position than anyone thought possible after Rutgers lost five straight.

    Maryland Terrapins

With the notable exception of Arkansas, no team in the projected field had a more transformational February than Maryland. In the middle of that month, the Terrapins were cooling their heels in the "first four out" waiting room. Now, after an 18-point win at home over Michigan State, Mark Turgeon's team is projected as a No. 9 seed and has been granted "should be in" privileges here at Bubble Watch. Maryland's defense in particular has been outstanding during this five-game win streak, holding opponents to just 0.90 points per possession. Partly that's the result of two home games against Nebraska, but this D was undeniably impressive against Rutgers and the Spartans as well. The Terps have put the pieces together.

    Work to do

    Indiana Hoosiers

At halftime of their home game against Michigan State not so very long ago, the Hoosiers held both a No. 11 seed in mock brackets and a four-point lead over the Spartans. Since that moment, however, Archie Miller's team has played its way onto the ridge dividing "last four in" and "first four out." IU lost to MSU, lost at Rutgers and lost at home by 16 to Michigan. Fortunately for Indiana, the Big Ten has put "opportunities for bubble teams" into mass production this season. (Look at the miraculous trajectories recorded by both Maryland and Michigan State.) If the Hoosiers were to get it into their minds to somehow win games at MSU and at Purdue, we would look back on this moment and wonder what all the fuss was about.

    Michigan State Spartans

By the lights of many bracket forecasters, Michigan State had, incredibly, played itself into the projected field as a No. 12 seed with its wins over Indiana, Illinois and Ohio State. It was a remarkable ascent, but it was followed by a rather unimpressive showing in a 73-55 loss at Maryland. Now that the Spartans' climb up the seed lines has hit a pause, consider MSU's future. A two-game set against Michigan will follow a home date against the Hoosiers. Those three opportunities for wins are not all created equal. One victory against the Wolverines hasn't done much good for Minnesota, granted, but it would be a precious commodity for the Spartans right now.
2012 Detroit Lions Draft: 1) Cordy Glenn G , 2) Brandon Taylor S, 3) Sean Spence olb, 4) Joe Adams WR/KR, 5) Matt McCants OT, 7a) B.J. Coleman QB 7b) Kewshan Martin WR

    • A sweep is an absolute must. Very possible to meet them in the conference tourney. Would love to avenge '19 with our own 3-0 year.

      • Michigan really needs to beat Illinois to get the whole regular season title thing out of the way.

Then, they need to punt MSU out the NCAA door with a sweep. Don't approach that series as a "All we need is one game" nonsense. Its both games or nothing. State will always be State. If they're going to play one more good game this year, it will be against Michigan.

        • Yeah, we need to beat them down in the worst way. I can't believe that this team might go 16-1 in a historically great conference.

          • The Illini are going to be tough. They're probably feeling a bit overlooked, so they'll be wanting to make a statement against Michigan.

MSU will have nothing to lose. They will literally throw everything at Michigan.

            • We've had a fairly easy schedule, and the lack of crowds helps us more than most other teams because our building isn't nearly as loud as some others, but still. This has been incredible. They were flat against Indiana in a trap game on the road and it was still a snoozer.

All that's great, but still. Sparty went 3-0 against us two years ago, and Livers and Davis were on those teams. They should be fired up hoping to get a shot at MSU again in the tournament. It will become a permanent part of rivalry lore to knock them out of tournament contention and end Izzo's 20-year tournament streak. This is a precious opportunity.

              • Michigan is up to the 16th toughest schedule per Kenpom. Most importantly Michigan (8-1) is now tied with Illinois (8-5) for the most Quad 1 wins in the country. The resume is really becoming quite impressive. Per NET rankings we swept both of current #29 Maryland and #24 Wisconsin, had blowout wins at #21 Purdue and home against #5 Iowa and won a showdown in Columbus with #8 OSU. If we beat Illinois, that will be a clean sweep of the entire (other) top 8 teams in the conference that is considered historically good.

IOW, we're fucking awesome and I'm really enjoying it.

                • Re: MSU

I still remember, and will never forget, the game where Izzo had Cleaves and the 'flintstones' shooting 3-pointers with a 40-point lead and the starters in the game until about 3:00 to go. And even after that, the "subs" were shooting (and making) three's.

I get it. Michigan was horrible. Brian Ellerbe was horrible-er. They would have had a tough time beating Lansing Eastern HS, much less the Spartans. But I've always believed if you want respect, show respect. If you want to receive honor, be honorable. MSU has never aspired to either of those.

                  • Could it really be that MSU, Duke, Kentucky and UNC all fail to make the tourney the same year Michigan is a #1 seed? Because that would be some cooooool shit.

                    Comment

                    • Kentucky is definitely out unless they win the SEC tourney.
Duke and MSU on the bubble.
UNC the most bizarre inconsistent team. They are in for now...
Add in there Arizona and Louisville. They are in but down this year.

Weird how the pandemic leads to ALL blue blood teams being down.... excluding UCLA.

                        Big Ten

                        Maryland Terrapins

Though the Terrapins' remarkable late-season surge came to an end with a five-point loss at Northwestern, Mark Turgeon's team has still dramatically improved its position in the span of just two weeks. Maryland wasn't even in the projected field of 68, but then wins over Minnesota, Rutgers and Michigan State as well as two victories over Nebraska lifted the Terps all the way to a potential spot on the No. 9 line. Turgeon's group has to take care of business at home against Penn State in the season finale, and then countless opportunities for seed-improving Quad 1 wins will await at the Big Ten tournament.

                        Rutgers Scarlet Knights

Nothing helps a struggling bubble team quite like a struggling opponent that has already played its way out of at-large contention. Rutgers appeared to be in a bit of bracket peril after a profile-damaging 21-point loss at Nebraska capped off a stretch of three defeats in four outings. But Steve Pikiell's men managed to pick up an overtime win at Minnesota in the season finale. The Scarlet Knights were being projected as a No. 10 seed at tipoff, which suggests that the program has indeed secured its first NCAA tournament bid in 30 years. An 0-1 showing by Rutgers at the Big Ten tournament, for example, would not appear to be a bid-stopper if, as seems plausible, the winning team in that game is a NET top-75 opponent.

                        Michigan State Spartans

If you're right on the edge between being in and out of the field, as Michigan State is, you could do worse than end the regular season with back-to-back games against a projected No. 1 seed. The Spartans dropped the first leg of their series against Michigan by 19 in Ann Arbor, and the rematch will occur in East Lansing on Sunday. A win would be self-evidently enormous for MSU, and, anyway, losses to an opponent as strong as the Wolverines aren't going to harm one's profile unduly. One more defeat would leave Michigan State at 14-12 and 8-12 in the Big Ten. That second mark, at least, was good enough for Ohio State to earn a No. 11 seed in 2019.

Seeding makes sense but region is totally unpredictable. In all of the years that I have been paying attention to bracket watch type stuff, I can’t remember anyone accurately predicting our opponents.
