Matt Painter "didn't recruit" for the 4 years E'Twaun Moore and JuJaun Johnson played at Purdue. Purdue does have enough talent on the roster to win at some point, but that will be next year (when the 4 star recruits become upperclassmen).
You really can't win with freshmen unless they are special (mostly 5 star top 25 players). There are exceptions, but this is Purdue... they won't win while all of their upperclassmen players (excluding Terome Johnson) weren't heavily recruited by anyone else. You need talented upperclassmen!

    • Problem is, Hammonds doesn't care about basketball and he's their only big time talent. They're screwed.

      • Purdue has a good bit of upside, no 'huge' talents other than Hammonds but they have a nice amount of young players who were highly thought of coming out of high school. Those guys just haven't showed much yet. Without knowing everyone who is returning for other schools and such, he's hard to project them for next season.

This is true and unfortunate. Hammonds grew up in one of the richest cities in the US, I'm interested to know more about his background lol... Maybe he has a big sense of entitlement/ isn't tough.

            • Wisconsin now has has wins over Florida, Virginia, Michigan, Michigan State and Iowa (2). And they drilled Virginia and Michigan on the road.

Definitely a January funk, but I don't know how people could doubt Bo Ryan and the way Wisky is always a really good B10 team (and a bad tourney team!).

              • I'm a bit confused about why they're a bad tourney team. Haven't watched closely enough, but their style should be more portable.

Wisconsin and ND have very similar systems and both struggle in the tourney.
Both teams milk the clock on offense, take a lot of 3's, and emphasize not turning the ball over more than anything. But yea, I don't get it.

                  • Well, looking at it like that, Michigan has the same philosophy as them It should translate.

                    • Yeah. M plays slower than Wisky, plays worse defense and relies an incredibly efficient offense. Statistically, at least, they're very, very similar teams.

Wisky, though, has never been "hot" in the tourney under Ryan. They've had some decent runs, but generally underperform. M under Beilein is 1-1-1....overachieving-even-underachieving.

But when it comes to B10 play, the infernal Badgers are always there. And right now they're in line to get the highest seed out of the B10.

                      • Also, it's not like Wisky is a disaster in the tourney -- 3 S16s in the past 6 seasons (as opposed to 1 for Beilien). However, even when they get to the S16, they lose games you feel like they could win -- Butler, Davidson -- even the close loss to Syracuse when their big guy was hurt.

                        • At Michigan, Beilien is actually 4-3 going against higher seeds and 3-1 against equal or lower seeds. He has been a really good tourney coach for us when he has made it in there. It's better than even money now that he'll end up with his highest tourney seed this year.

                          • Oops, I forgot his first tourney with M.

                            1 overacheiving. 2 expected (8-9/7-10 games are toss-ups). 1 underacheiving.

                            1 S16.

The loss to Ohio was particularly bad b/c the 5 seed in their bracket went down and UNC was without their PG and a very beatable #1 -- Ohio almost beat them, in fact.

Thanks to Trey Burke and KU's collapse, he has a respectable record. He was 4-3 staring at 4-4 with 5 minutes left in a game they probably lose 90-95% of the time. The vagaries of the NCAA tournament.

                            • Bo Ryan has made the NCAA Tourney 12 times. 6/12, they lost in the 1st round. Ryan has never been to the Final 4 as well.

                                That's a pretty poor metric.

Beliein is undefeated in "tossup" games. His four losses have been one egg-laying upset and then three losses to #1s or #2s. Going back to his last two years at WVU, he has been an outstanding tourney coach, meeting or exceeding the expectations of the team's seed all but once (2012). Throughout his career, his teams have constintly outperformed their seeds and this has continued at Michigan. This isn't debateable.

His problem is that for his first few years, his recruiting and retention at Michigan was attrocious, and he pissed away the '09-'10 team. So he was always having to overacheive with guys like Novak and Douglass leading the team. That's why we only have one Sweet Sixteen during his tenure.

That and he sucks in the Big Ten tournament.
