If that’s it…I honestly don’t have a problem with it. With the clear caveat that this shit is over by close-of-business tomorrow. In fact, I’d rather it be about $$$ than academics. What Kelly did this year was fairly spectacular, even with the blowout Monday night, and the cash is pouring into Notre Dame directly because of it.

In so far as I know, it may not be $$$ just for him (Kelly). Our DC Bob Diaco is on a couple candidate lists for HC spots. Kelly may be squeezing $$$ to retain him, or to ensure that he has everything he needs to go out and get a platinum replacement.

If it’s about $$$ and is over tomorrow…it’s all good as far as I’m concerned.

I am surprised we haven't heard any concerns voiced yet from ND commits. Even if Kelly stays, which I am almost certain he will, I wonder if the fact that he looked at it will make recruits worry he won't stay for their full four years. .
ND board moderators are on that…don’t think it’s a major issue. A couple of copy/pasted quotes:

"If Brian Kelly Leaves!!!!....I'm still a domer shoutout to my ND fans" (Jaylon Smith)

"Still feeling 100% confident, I'll be there in 72 hours" (James Onwualu)

It’s the work put into the 2014 class that would be wasted.

Time for Urban to interview with Eagles ... Talent, heh.
Urban’s too busy trying to get hold of Jimmy Byrne right now…

    • Changing jobs is what coaches do. All the freaking time. I'm no ND slappy but I sure don't see any reason to call Kelly a snake in the grass.

      • Obvious negotiating ploy, but man, it would be hilarious if he left.
Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?
        Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.

        • Did Penn State's coach actually interview with an NFL team? I love how these guys play footsie and then come back and say how staisfied they are where they're at. Then why were you talking to NFL teams?

There is a plethora of hilarity on the ND boards right now...

I think he'll be back, but don't know that he will ever have the trust and adoration of the fan base that he had at this time yesterday.

If nothing else, he has succeeded in getting the blow-out loss off the front page...

            • Right out of Weis' playbook, NFL teams takes sniff and Charlie screws ND for 40 million.

In the last four months, Kelly went from being one of a dozen successful Big East coaches who looked mediocre at a big program, to being the first coach to take ND to the top in 20 years.

That's a vast difference in market value that will be (I'm guessing) addressed in short order.

                • Not to hijack the thread, but as per yesterday's discussion about what Michigan wants out of a coach, this sort of situation is the nightmare scenario in Ann Arbor. They'd find it utterly humiliating. Which is probably why Harbaugh was not relentlessly pursued. The football coach at Michigan first and foremost should not be a person who has the potential to have any sort of leverage over the school. The Process proceeds from there.

In reality, however, this is how the game is played, and Kelly has proved his worth and indeed has a higher market value. My feeling is that you should pay people what they're worth. I don't know what it is about Kelly, since he does things that don't seem to be on paper wise, like how he's a terrible screamer and rides the QB carousel, but obviously what he's doing is working and he's clearly a very good coach.

                    • will his system work in the NFL?

and I'm sorry, but if you turn around ND, you ask for more money and stay. NFL chews threw coaches. At ND, you can have a legacy. There has to be something behind the scenes that is driving this..

                      • The Kelley stuff ........

This just pisses me off. If I was a ND fan, I'd be livid. The uncertainty this kind of activity that Kelley seems to be involved in creates with recruits has a powerful negative impact on the program.

I just don't get it. There is no such thing as loyalty it seems. For a bigger pay-check and his ego Kelley is going to dump on ND. Utterly despicable.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

His system? No, and that is not what he is being courted by the Eagles for. He gets results. What he needs to do is talk to the Nick about the NFL. He'll not have the kind of control he has in the college game at the NFL level. That, according to peole who have discussed this in private with Saban are what did him in. He and Kelley are notorious control freaks. They have to run it all or not at all. The eagles can promise Kelley anything he wants but in the end, he's not going to get enough control given how NFL teams are run, caps and player contracts. If he goes, and I think this is a salary ploy, he'll be back to CFB hat in hand.

                          • The question is whether a coach really wants to coach in the NFL or not. I haven't a clue what BK's ambitions are. I do know that there are only 32 NFL HC jobs in the world. If that's your career goal, and you have a good opportunity, you take it.

I wouldn't fault any coach for those ambitions, either. Winning in the NFL is the pinnacle.

Disagree. I think in a lot of areas loyalty counts for nothing anymore. Bemoan the developments in the system if you will, but that's a different discussion. Brian Kelly's not a charity -- he's a football coach and that's how he puts food on the table. He's entitled to be paid what he's worth Participants in the current system who think that loyalty will count usually are disillusioned in the end, and I don't blame them for looking out for their own interests. That's just smart policy in today's job market, whether for football coaches or anyone else.

If ND wants Kelly they probably need to pay up. If they wanted him at a discount to his market value then they risk suffering the consequences of trying to have their cake and eat it too, and they deserve what's coming to them.
