Here's the latest from Brandon per the Freep. Apparently he was on a radio show talking about it earlier today...

Lets try instead the senior years of Bob Timberlake, Don Moorhead, Dennis Franklin, Ricky Leach, Jim Harbaugh, Elvis Grbac, Todd Collins, Brian Griese, Tom Brady, and maybe even Chad Henne. I think (without looking up stats on each) that a case could be made for each any every one of them as to who had better senior seasons. For starters, most of them won Big Ten Championships in their senior season, most of them beat Ohio in their senior season. Most not named Henne, anyway....

Now, back to the cancellation letter...
Not knowing the exact terms of the contract and the potential difficulties in re-writing schedules on short notice, I am 100% in agreement with Liney's idea of Brandon countering by dropping ND after the 2013 game. Sure, it'll cost U of M and Brandon some cash for opting out early, but all they have to instead do is add a home game in 2014 against any Division I team they can find on short notice, even toss them a few extra bucks to cover any cost they might incur to get out of a game already on their schedule, and it shouldn't be all that difficult to recoup (and then some) the $$$ that we have to give ND as a penalty for said early opt-out.
ND? At this point, who needs 'em!

If it played out that Brandon was not directly told the series was off until one hour before the game, then that's total BS. I would support him completely if he returned the favor and slipped over to Swarbrick's box 15 minutes before the 2013 game with a letter from the league wishing ND well and informing them that Purdue, MSU, and Michigan were cancelling their series effective the 2013 season. Whatever the buyout is, pay it.Last edited by Dr. Strangelove; September 25, 2012, 06:48 PM.

Nothing against you Clash, you're a great fan, and I almost always root for ND over UM, but your AD bungled this it appears. And if Swarbrick won't pay simple courtesy to one of our conference members, even if it's Michigan, then I would hope a united conference reacts appropriately.
This all is predicated upon Domino Dave's version of events being accurate. But I've no real reason to doubt it.

Michigan State's athletic department makes more money than USC though so I don't buy the "we'll starve without ND" excuse. They've averaged close to a sellout crowd for 15 seasons and counting.
Purdue's the one who'd be most adversely affected but go and read ND boards and they're the one most Domers would've chosen to sacrifice first. Their letter is probably coming eventually.

I agree with both of you, WM and DSL to this extent: Purdue really does need ND, while state thinks they need ND. I haven't looked at any state forums in a couple weeks, but I would guess that at least a few msu fans are laughing about the "rejection letter" Brandon and U of M got, maybe thinking that ND values them more than us.
As for Purdue, I looked at their listed home attendance figures this year---they show less than 41,000 in attendance for each of their home games this season, even though they were advertising deep discounts to try to get butts in the seats at Ross-Ade. Can anyone imagine The Big House, the horseshoe, or ND Stadium less than 2/3 full? Purdue is never even close to a sellout unless they have ND, IU, U of M or ohio in town, so I doubt they want to give up one of their most lucrative home dates every other year.

dsl,
Agree from ND's POV but I was seeing this from MSU/Purdue, ND is awfully important to them and would resist the B10 wanting to stop playing them. I also can't see the B10 doing so either, when ND plays in B10 stadiums, it gets a national broadcast and very good ratings and is a part of any TV deal... Ball is in ND's court in regards who they play.

Look, obviously I'm already voluntarily on record as saying that if...if...this went down as Brandon says, it's shitty and unprofessional. Very little defense for something like that. Even if Brandon is stretching some things, I would think that Swarbrick woulda/coulda/shoulda taken action to avoid being in a position where this issue could be portrayed the way it's being portrayed.
Having said that...this would be the first time I've heard of Swarbrick being involved in anything that could be construed as less than first class. I would also point out that the letter is dated the day before the game and references a previous discussion. Brandon does say that he was aware that a termination letter was pending...but that he didn't understand it would include the 2012 game...in other words, a "he said" / "she said" thing.
We haven't heard from Swarbrick as of yet. He is giving a presser at 7pm tonight...I'll withhold further commentary until I've had a chance to hear what he has to say.

You know that ain't true. When that kid was killed when the tower blew over in high winds Swarbuck was quoted extensively saying he had walked over to the practice field and around campus at the time and found "nothing unusual' about the wind or weather and "nothing that would cause anyone to be concerned". Swarbuck shows time and time again that he'll do whatever ands ay whatever is in ND's vested interest. Fuck him. He is no stand up guy.

Stan, I think it's a bit weak to use that tragedy as an example against Swarbrick. Obviously a kid died in what should have been a completely avoidable accident...there is no way to spin that for anybody. I seriously doubt Jack Swarbrick has taken the OSHA 30 hour safety certification, which wouldn't cover lift requirements in high wind regardless (I know, I am OSHA certified). As one of the few threads that doesn't get deleted, you can go back to page one and read my extensive thoughts on that terribly unfortunate event...I just re-read it and my thoughts on it haven't changed.
Their was nothing from Swarbrick last night. It wasn't a press conference at all. More like a first-time "webcast" where Swarbrick was asked a couple of questions from local ND bloggers...in short, bullshit.
