  • I don't have a link with the exact report (I'll provide it later if I come across it), but according to one of the other South Bend TV stations, police are looking into the possibility that some or all of the 4 men who escaped by running, when officers approached them, were possibly ND Football Players.

According to the document from the prosecutor's office I posted above, 5 males who appeared to possibly be under-aged (including Tommy Rees) attempted to flee the scene when officers arrived; all but Rees were successful in their attempt to escape.

What I don't know, at this point, is whether police have some solid leads as to the identity of the 4 who escaped, or if this is just idle speculation on the part of that station's reporters.

    • According to police, Rees ran from officer Brandon Stec. Rees ran out onto Notre Dame Avenue. Police say a cab driver saw the pursuit and blocked Rees's path. They, they say Rees raised his knee into the officer, knocking the wind out of him. Officials say the cab driver then grabbed Rees and kept him from running away. When the officer tried to arrest Rees, police say Rees scuffled with him and they both fell back on the pavement. Stec sustained scrapes to the arm in the struggle.
How is that not a felony now? Can one of the lawyers (Stan/Talent) here shed some light on this.

      • Shocked.

        College students drink.

Why did these guys run turning a minor in house disciplinary matter into a national story and in Reese's case ruined the boy?
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

Refer to your first statement (not the "shocked" part) to get the answer to your second! You may have to amend it to "college students drink a lot".

          • I don't see how Rees can avoid a felony charge if his attempt to flee got an officer injured.

            • I am sure Kelly will be able to whitewash this a la Michael Floyd-style.

" After directly consulting the Catholic Church, Notre Dame, the Pope and even JC himself, it was unanimously agreed that Tommy Rees will ultimately "answer to a higher authority" for this misunderstanding with law enforcement. . Therefore we see no reason why he can't continue to play University football on Saturdays."

                • Maybe the officer has (or needs) season tickets?

According to our insiders, this blog write up (from an on-campus source) is the most fair and accurate...

Too busy to comment now...will throw in my two cents later tonight.

                    • It appears that the prosecutor used his discretion and only charged Reese with a misdemeanor for strikng the officer. He certainly could have been charged with a felony had the prosecutor decided to do so. Frankly I'm surprised he didn't beause assaults on police are usually overcharged not undercharged. It's possible the prosecutor got the permission of the officer to undercharge. Reese may have gotten a break because he's a ND football player, but a felony charge could have gotten him expelled even without a conviction as I understand ND's disciplinary sytem. Personally I think Reese's conduct falls far short of the level of conduct that MSU finds acceptable for its players. I say Kudos to the prosecutor for not screwing over the kid's life for a stupid mistake.

                      • While I would tend to agree, I also agree that you are correct that they overcharge the heck out of that one. When I was a police reporter I saw way too many arrest reports in which the only charge was resisting arrest. Two wrongs don't make a right, but then again its never good to see an athlete get special treatment.

I certainly agree with that and I didn't mean to suggest that such "special treatment" is warranted, merely that it appears "special treatment" was given for one reason or another, i.e he's a football player or an ND student or a kid with a clean record.

                              This is topic at hand...

I'm still on the Kelly bandwagon, but if there is a glaring weakness, it has been personnel decisions on the field. He named Crist the starter at the end of fall camp and had him take most of the snaps prepping for S. Florida. Then pulled Crist after the first half of the first game.

Cierre Wood will be our starting running back for the third straight year, yet almost nobody has heard of him. He was clearly out performed as a freshman by classmate Theo Riddick, who Kelly immediately moved to slot receiver...where he's done nothing. Meanwhile, Wood has been overshadowed by 2nd stringer Robert Hughes in '10, losing the starting spot by the end of the season. Then overshadowed by 2nd stringer Jonas Gray in '11, again losing the starting spot until Gray went down to injury.

Per the spring game, Wood was thoroughly out classed both by Riddick (who is now back at RB) as well as Soph. George Atkinson...total misappropriation of talent.

I like Tommy Rees...I wanted him to start last year in-lieu-of Crist...but he's not our future. We've seen his ceiling. He's smart, gritty and cool under pressure, but just doesn't have the tools to take us this offense to the next level...

...yet before this arrest, it looked like Kelly was gearing up for another drawn out QB mess (don't know that...what he does behind closed doors is different that what he tells the press).

Tommy Rees is exactly the kind of guy you want on the team...a perfect QB option if your starter is having a meltdown, but there is a major problem with this staff if either Hendrix or Golston isn't ready to play in Sept.

Most of NDNation agreed/agrees with this...the more details come out...the more it sounds like the kid was just in total panic mode. Kicking and flailing every which way to get away, not necessarily to cause injury. Now I know that wouldn't/couldn't/shouldn't matter, but I'm also hearing that he was given consideration due to this being his first fuck-up...
