  • NEW YORK -- Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o has told Katie Couric that he briefly lied about his online girlfriend after discovering she didn't exist, while maintaining that he had no part in creating the hoax.

Pressed by Couric to admit that he was in on the deception, Te'o said he believed that his girlfriend Lennay Kekua had died of cancer and didn't lie about it until December.

"Katie, put yourself in my situation. I, my whole world told me that she died on Sept. 12. Everybody knew that. This girl, who I committed myself to, died on Sept. 12," Te'o said in an interview to air Thursday on Couric's syndicated talk show. A segment of the interview with Te'o and his parents was broadcast Wednesday on "Good Morning America."

The Heisman Trophy runner-up said he only learned of the hoax when he received a phone call in December from a woman saying she was Kekua.

"Now I get a phone call on Dec. 6, saying that she's alive and then I'm going be put on national TV two days later. And to ask me about the same question. You know, what would you do?" Te'o said.

An Associated Press review of news coverage found that the Heisman Trophy runner-up talked about his doomed love in a Web interview on Dec. 8 and again in a newspaper interview published Dec. 10.

Te'o's father defended his son when Couric pointed out that many people don't believe the Irish star, suspecting he used the situation for personal gain.

"People can speculate about what they think he is. I've known him 21 years of his life. And he's not a liar. He's a kid," Brian Te'o said with tears in his eyes.

On Tuesday, the woman whose photo was used as the "face" of the Twitter account of Te'o's supposed girlfriend says the man allegedly behind the hoax confessed and apologized to her.

Diane O'Meara told NBC's "Today" show that Ronaiah Tuiasosopo used pictures of her without her knowledge in creating a fake woman called Lennay Kekua.

no manti, no one else told you she was dead. There was no funeral and there was no obituary. And we have put ourselves in your position and we find it strange.

And dad? He is a liar.

That's because they haven't said anything of substance that can be disproven. They didn't investigate his phone records or ask him to produce all of his correspondences with this girlfriend who was supposedly the love of his life for three years. Who was never talked about as an internet-only girlfriend until after this blew up in everyone's faces. No financial records, like credit card bills showing that he bought flowers for her while she was sick. No plausible explanation for why he never met her after three years. No plausible explanation for why the South Bend Tribune described them as having met in person. Who told them that? Is anyone trying to trace the origin of that story? No plausible explanation for how this guy supposedly became enamored with somebody that he only had electronic communications with. No plausible explanation for why they never even video conferenced or used Facetime. I have never, in the entire age of the internet, heard of somebody carrying on a relationship for three years and not wanting to meet. Ever.

Was Manti Teo really talking to somebody for three years on the phone and not caring if he met her in person? Somebody genuinely put that kind of effort into a hoax? That's a full time job, for fucks sake. I'll bet that Nigerian e-mail scammers don't even work that hard. Isn't it funny how there is no investigation into this woman to see who she is? Has anyone even called the number? Did this person go through the effort of using an untraceable terrorist phone to talk to Teo every time? If not, it would take probably five minutes to find out who the actress is if there was one. There is about the same amount of effort being put into that as there was being put into finding the "real killers" of Nicole Simpson. Did Teo not ever see pictures of this woman with her friends, family, or pets? For most people who have bought Teo's story -- I don't think that it has occurred to them the magnitude of effort and false information that it would take to pull off a hoax like this. Not to mention -- it would have cost some money too.

What kind of cosmically unlikely occurrences would it take for Manti Teo to truly have been the victim of this incredibly dedicated and elaborate hoax for three years? That Teo is a lying, narcissistic attention whore is a much more likely explanation that fits all of the available data. Reference my previous statement about Occam's Razor.

        • You're being remarkably generous, Hanni, with "much more likely" -- I might have gone with "only".
Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?

          • Hanni,

Great analysis. None of those questions will ever be asked by anyone in the mainstream media. They're happy to accept the word of Te'o and ND, and sweep it all under the proverbial rug. Lizzy Seeburg's family knows that firsthand.

In the wake of the Manti Te'o girlfriend hoax, Jeff Darlington reports that several Washington Redskins players were duped by a woman maintaining a false online identity, prompting an NFL probe.

LOL. The only reason Lennay and Manti never is that every time she agreed to meet him she ended up not showing.
