  • The key to gaining a huge negotiating advantage is to negotiate with the desperate and/or those significantly weaker than you. That's the ACC. That's also why, among other reasons, ND would never join the B10 -- it had to be on equal terms and then ND would have been but 1 of 5 programs with huge tradition and lore.

I do think Swofford took it up the ass because long-term he knows ND will have to join a conference. So, they eat some poop short-term and get the reward long-term.

Vomit. M should be watching ND and that's a tough pill to swallow."

      Told ya so!

You really cannot equate ND's national prominence (despite football performance) with Boise or TCU.

Simply put, Notre Dame is Notre Dame and that always means something (a lot)

        • I like this quote from a Notre Dame official (in an CNNSI article):

"If we wanted to do something for money we would have joined the Big Ten. What it's really about is postseason play."
Big Ten has gads more money, but fuck me, it'd be a lot harder to do well in the B10 than the ACC.

            • I guess I shouldn't post quotes from Notre Dame folks.

                    • Don't mean to step on Talent's toes here in his desire to post quotes from Notre Dame folks, but here are some Big Ten related questions and answers from Kelly's interview today...

Q: Michigan and Michigan State could possibly take a hit. Is that a little bit of a worry because those have been such great rivalries for the program?

BK: Yeah, there's going to have to be some give and take in terms of who we play. Jack (Swarbrick) made it pretty clear that we'll maintain some traditional rivalries, and certainly there's going to be a Big Ten component there. We'll see how that goes. We're going to try to make it work with the entire Big Ten. There are some great schools that I personally would like to see us play as well. Michigan, Michigan State has been a great rivalry. Ohio State, Wisconsin, Indiana…I could name a number of schools that would be attractive. They'll ask my opinion but somebody else will be making that call.

Q: Any downside or any immediate concern when you begin playing the different schedule?

BK: I really can't see it in any shape or fashion. Obviously if every year, you have to play Florida State, Clemson, Virginia Tech, Miami whatever the case may be, obviously you have to balance your schedule out. But I think it's going to rotate out well. I can't find a downside to it.

Q: Jack said that was your first question about how that ACC portion of the schedule will balance out.

BK: I'm living in 2012 right now. Did you look at that schedule up there?

                      • I've never been enthused about playing ND, even in the recent years when we have won more than our share. It ticks me off that they get special consideration regarding TV coverage, bowl eligibility, and generally an advantage in all realms of media exposure. It never has been a truly level playing field. So I say why keep playing this game by their rules. If they will join the B1G that's different.

This is nothing against Clash or the Notre Dame fandom or the school itself. They have a top notch university and many many fine attributes. But, they compete with us directly for recruits and will always have many intangible advantages over members of the conference. And when they bring in the next Ara Parseghian, or Frank Leahy, or even Lou Holtz they'll waltz right back up to the top of the heap.

I don't feel this way about MSU or even OSU. They work within the framework of a joint and equally arranged conference where there is sharing of revenues and other measures of equality. And I'll even add praise the scarlet and gray by noting they don't schedule ND and it hasn't hurt them one bit.

I just don't like organizations where one member is considered special and better than anyone else regardless of achievements.

                          • The perfect description of ND football:

"Despite posting a 32-31 record the past five seasons and winning 10 games twice since 1993, the Irish remain a force. They've become that high school hot girl who shows up at the reunion 20 years later, looking a bit haggard but still attractive in a nostalgic kind of way."

                            • I agree with Doc Hodgman. Its time for the B1G to put ND in the rear view mirror. Stop scheduling them, and move on. If they want to be ACC, its fine with me.
"The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, .. I'd worn them for weeks, and they needed the air"

                              • If we knock ND for being that we've got to look @ M too. Obviously not to the same extent, but both schools are suffering from recent performance, yet buffeted by strong alumni and overall fan interest and demand. I don't think it's a mystery why ND has the leverage that it currently has.
