  • Yeah, I'm not sure who M, MSU and Purdue will schedule, but I do think it fairly likely those games will come to an end.

ND will likely protect USC and Navy and probably Stanford. 5 ACC games. There's really no way they play those B10 schools and do anything other than carry on with 5 loss (or worse) seasons.

Anyway, I'm not sure I would replace ND with any one team. It's an opportunity for M to play a different big-time program every two years.

    • Neat! But, very skeptical.

What's the status of the B10/Pac alliance? It was on and then off. Are there negotiations now?

Not sure this is "Big 10's response to Notre Dame" as its just what needs to happen for ND to meet their new ACC obligations

          no..its the response...

          • If Purdue, MSU, and UM find it profitable to scheule ND, then it would be stupid of them to call it off because of this.

I have no idea what ND would want to do. I would be surprised if they don't want to at least keep diluted versions of those semi-rivalries going. I figure USC should be priority #1 for them. After that, you've got six games left to schedule your desire of Stanford, Michigan, MSU, Purdue, the three military academies, and your at-large stuff.

Me, I'd be satisfied with making it an "every other year" type of thing.

            • Michigan will attempt to start scheduling USC....
Please, for the love of God, no.

              • It's almost certainly not more profitable for M. MSU is probably close depending on who they get to replace ND. Purdue, yes. I assume Purdue will not sell-out for whomever they get to replace ND.

M will get their sellout and, if they schedule a big-name team, as good or better exposure.

                • I have been wanting M to at least drop ND to every other year for a while. In part, so that we can schedule a big OOC other than ND without putting two tough games on the schedule.

                  • I think it's a much better route for M, nationally. Michigan-Texas or Michigan-USC or Michigan-Oklahoma are, I think, more attractive national games.

That said, (a) a ton of M fans thoroughly enjoy the regular beatings of ND; and (b) it's highly hyped game with far less risk than playing, well, a top-shelf program. So, lots of benefit with less risk.

                    • "Regular beatings" are only an occurence of the past six years. I'm old enough to remember when it was the other way around from '87 through '93, when we went 1-5-1. This rivalry brought nothing but misery to my life until the 2006 South Bend pummeling, which brought an end to 23 years of inexplicable and infuriating overachievement by ND against Michigan.

                      • Well, heh, that was when ND was good. In the past 15 years, they're something like 21-25 against the B10.

                        • Lots of stuff flying around...hard to pinpoint what is real and what is rumor. At this point, I think the most significant detail to this news is the ACC's vote to increase the buyout cost to leave the ACC at the annual operating budget, multiplied by three...that makes this it a $50 million decision commitment and tells me that ND is committed to ACC for the long term.

Otherwise, I've heard that ND is looking to maintain USC, Navy and Stanford on the schedule...all other opponents are susceptible to being replaced.

Even in the Bob Davie and Tyrone Willingham years, we were only 3-3 against them, and our '97 and '99 wins were close shaves that should have easily been 2+ touchdown victories. They simply owned us mentally until the Charlie Weis years.

                            • Is UM replacing ND with USC, or just skedding a home-and-home? Let's play a variety of big-name opponents.

After sitting through more than enough Rose Bowl games where we lost to USC, .. I'd LOVE the chance to smack those guys around on our own turf for a few games. And, I'd make them stay in Ypsilanti rather than Ann Arbor,... just for spite ...
