Contrast this with an anecdote that Beano Cook had on the ESPN College Football podcast a few weeks ago...

Lou Holtz apparently wanted to put Shamrocks on the helmet. The president invited him into his office and said "Do you see that golden dome over there? Do you see a Shamrock on it?" And that was the end of the conversation.

IMO these are the worst uniforms I have ever seen (in college) I actually liked Maryland first game uniform last year. The Philadelphia Eagles had some kind of a throw back 3 years ago beating the Lions in Philly, they were as bad if not worse.

Notre Dame's shamrock helmet goes back long before Lou Holtz. They used it on a regular basis in the late 50's-early 60's
