  • Yes it's called the CRTC, Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission,
is a public organization with mandate as a regulatory agency for broadcasting and telecommunications, similar to the the FCC in the US. It is federal law created by an act of Parliament, they even block US commercials from being broadcast in Canada during the Super Bowl!

    • I think part of the reason for the TV thing is that Canadian TV is heavily subsidized by the Canadian government. So they don't want American shows coming up to Canada to film "Canadian" shows and get governemnt money without there being any actual benefit to the Canadian people.

Unless the NHL becomes government subsidized I don't see the parallels. But I'm not super familiar with the quotas in TV, other than I had Canadian friends in LA who got jobs on things that were shot in Canada specifically because they were Canadian and the production was desperately trying to meet the quotas.

That is not true. CBC is the only station that is subsidized by the Canadian government. Follows along the same line as the BBC in the UK.

          • Sorry, living in the states, CBC IS Canadian television! I know you have other stations, but I've only seen them when visiting Canada. And I'm usually skiing when I do that, not watching TV.

            • Wonderful news, for the NHL. The greatest offensive player in the game by a mile should be back for the playoffs which is bad news for the Eastern Conference. A year off, fresh legs...I am smellin' another Stanley Cup berth for the 24-year old Captain.

Report: Sidney Crosby has two injured vertebrae
Joe Yerdon Jan 28, 2012, 6:44 PM EST

The Sidney Crosby injury saga in Pittsburgh is taking another fascinating turn.

According to Sportsnet 590′s Bob McCown, Crosby was concerned with the medical treatment he’s gotten from the Penguins staff and met with a specialist in Utah where it was discovered he has an abnormality in two of his vertebrae (C1 and C2 in the neck) on top of the concussion suffered in December. McCown says that doctors expect Crosby to heal fine and be ready for the playoffs.

CBC’s Elliotte Friedman confirmed the story with Crosby’s agent Pat Brisson who says the possibility he has two fractured vertebrae was raised last week and he’ll be meeting with a third doctor to determine the diagnosis.

If this report turns out to be true and Crosby does indeed have two fractured vertebrae, the questions surrounding the Penguins’ handling of Crosby’s injuries will only grow larger and more pointed. With how methodical they’ve been in handling Crosby’s concussion since seemingly mistreating him last season, missing out on a neck injury would be a glaring error.

Crosby just returned from California where he was meeting a neurological spine specialist and has already begun skating. Penguins GM Ray Shero sounded optimistic about Crosby’s progress earlier today, but with this latest revelation there will be a lot more questions in need of answers.

Here’s video of McCown’s appearance on Sportsnet discussing what he’s found out.

Expect Arron Asham to visit DK soon......The dirty European's weapon of choice is usually the stick but in this particular case it was an elbow to Sid's face. Don't worry, DK will see Asham coming from 200 ft away but there will not be a damn thing he can do about it.

Pat Brisson, the agent for the Pittsburgh Penguins captain, confirmed to Hockey Night in Canada's Elliotte Friedman on Saturday that Crosby may have fractured the C1 and C2 vertebrae, likely when he was hit by Boston Bruins centre David Krejci on Dec. 5.

                • To each their own, frankly just 5 simple words IMO, greatest hockey nation on earth. But I have to agree with you in one aspect, that 1996-97 Red Wings Stanley Team that ended a 42 -year drought, led by Captain Yzerman was one of the best ever.

Looking closely at the roster makeup confirms the obvious:

                  CDN-21
                  RUS-5
                  SWE-4
                  US-1

                  * Regular season & Playoff roster, includes season trades with Hartford, Pittsburgh, Toronto & San Jose.

                  • Crosby may make it another season or two before he wises up and realizes he's gambling with his long-term health and cognitive functioning.

Traumatic encephalopathy is no laughing matter. I'd make a substantial wager he has it.

                    • Football, Hockey & Boxing are incredibly violent "gladiatorial" sports, each athlete takes his chances, they know that. With modern state-of-the-art medical science, concussion diagnosis is made much easier today but I suspect the numbers have been historically constant in sport.

As for hockey, honestly with video replay and multiple on-ice officials, if you intentionally injure a player, you are suspended for as long as that player remains on injury reserve. Sending a strong message will cleanup the "dirty crap" rather quickly, IMO.

A review board of former players & officials make each determination.

There literally has to have been 100's of guys that have continued to play without knowing that they had sustained a concussion at some point in their respective careers.

You say that as if people are actually sitting around challenging it. Hockey could double in popularity in the US and it would still be somewhat of an afterthought:

Considering that in the US, hockey ranks even behind auto racing in terms of popularity, I doubt you will see any huge effort to improve our national team beyond what has already been done. The reality is, most American's don't really care about international hockey.

                          • That is your exclusive perception, erroneous I might add. Frankly what would "US Popularity" have to do with hockey anyway? If you are incapable to appreciating the perfect game for what it is, your loss not mine. There are many nations where the game reigns supreme and not sure why you would purport to speak on behalf of 320 million people anyway?

                            Toney G:

Scott Stevens was one of the best, EVER. But I never forgave him to catching Lindros looking down at the puck, knocked him out and shortened his career. Finish your check sure but he should have let up rather than lead with his shoulder to Lindros' head.
