  • I read Probert's book Tough Guy this past summer and recommend it to any Wings fan.

Great quote early in the book from Don Cherry: "When Probie was fighting did you ever see anyone leave their seat and go for coffee?"

    • Wings go for a club record 15 straight at home tonight!

      • Wings up 5-0 with 7 min to go in the game, I think it's safe to say "they'll be going for their record 16th in a row at home" next

        • Another shoot-out win for Wings last night. They've got one of the best records in the league. I still don't think they're as good as they've been in recent years, but they've had good luck with regard to injuries this year...

          • That and they're getting great goaltending.

            • Looks to be a done deal, announcement to be made in February.

Michigan, NHL discussing Winter Classic deal
              The Associated Press
              18/01/2012 2:15:00 PM
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - University of Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon says the school and the NHL are discussing bringing the Winter Classic to Michigan Stadium.

Brandon said conversations about the annual showcase game outdoors were continuing Wednesday amid reports that the Detroit Red Wings would play the Toronto Maple Leafs on Jan. 1, 2013, at the Big House, which holds 110,000 on football game days.
The NHL said it had nothing to announce about the 2013 game.
Buffalo, Chicago, Boston, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia have hosted the event, though the crowd for a Michigan Stadium game would likely be the biggest: Michigan and Michigan State attracted a Guinness World Record 104,173 people for a hockey game on Dec. 11, 2010.
I'll need to call up Don regarding tixs.

                • As much as I love seeing some of those pretty shootout goals, it reminds me how silly the whole shootout format is.

                  • I love the current tie-breaking system, with the 5 minute overtime and then the shootout. It's much better than soccer, for example, where the shootout seems to be mainly a matter of luck. I would be amenable to doing away with the 1 point for an OT loss (which would help the Red Wings this year, as we have only 1 OT loss).

I agree with Jamie that our goal tending has been a big positive this year. That goes a long way in explaining our shootout success...

                    • I think the OT period should be 10 minutes instead of 5, and the last 5 minutes should be 4 on 4.

While I'm busy pontificating a bit here, another rules change I'd like to see is when the trailing team pulls its goalie to give itself 6 attackers, the "defending our lead" team should be able to ice the puck like they can during a regular power play.

What do you hockey mavens have to say about that? Stupid idea?

                      • Both terrific ideas for hockey, absolute hate ties in hockey/soccer.

                        • I'd like to see hockey add 5 more minutes of 3-on-3 before the shootout. I don't hate the shootout, but 3 point games are stupid. The two teams shouldn't mutually benefit just because you don't have one team outscore the other.

I'd also like to see the NHL do 4-on-4 overtime in the playoffs. They aren't as common as they were before the lockout, but I have always thought that those quadruple OT marathons are a damn joke.

                          Comment

                          • The whole point is to have teams go for broke in OT because there is no penalty to losing. Before the change, teams were just turtling in OT to avoid losing. Now, you might as well go for the goal.

I don't mind it. The regular season is so long and tedious anyway that I don't care. As long as they keep the playoff OT the way it is.

                            Comment

                            • Now you're just as likely to get teams turtling in the final two minutes, since it guarantees you a point. And since the 3 point games came into being, I don't think we're seeing a much higher percentage of OT games end in less than 5 minutes. Some teams partake in a ridiculous amount of shootouts.

What they should do is make regulation and OT wins worth 3 points. Then a shootout win is 2, and a shootout loss is 1.
