Game 3 at the Joe will tell it all IMO, but surrendering 5 goals in a playoffs, that's brutal.
Hope you are in better sprits now Packfan. Wings although initially outplayed earned the split, have home-ice and now are in the drivers'seat!

    • Didn't see it. Who was in Goal?
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

          • What a game that's going on in Chicago ! Going into double overtime now, nothing better than NHL playoff overtime - non-stop with no commercials.

            • Good to see that the Red Wings can prosper in Soccer on Ice. LOL Mrzak made a whopping 22 saves and the Red Wings responded with a barrage of their own (21 shots).

Last nights' games were 2-1 (in OT), 3-0 (with an empty netter), 3-2 (in multiple OT), and 3-1 (with all of the game's goals scored in the first 15 minutes) The night before was 3-0 (with another empty-netter), 2-1, and 5-4. One out of the past 7 games has had more than 4 regulation goals in it. Wheeee! The Dead Puck Era is officially back! I can't wait until five years from now when Connor Macdavid has been reshaped into a defensive forward who scores 70 points playing the neutral zone trap.

              • I don't know about that Hanni, over the last 15 years scoring in the NHL has averaged 5,500-7,000 goals a year. Playoffs always tighten up defensively but the League only dropped below 4k goals scored twice in that span. (See chart 4 at the bottom).

The size of goaltender equipment, apparently in the name of safety is a serious issue. Not to mention 3 shortened seasons by strike/Lockouts.

                • To date, series have been, scoring-wise, fairly dour. Rangers beating Pens by infernal 2-1 scoreline sucks. Still have faint memories of Kings-Hawks skating and scoring for 7 games last season. Still enjoy Hanni's curmudgeonly take on nearly anything.
Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?
                  Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.

Not all of the goaltender equipment has to be as big as it is to keep them safe. The stick, for one, could be just a normal size stick and the catching glove could be smaller. The pads and the blocker could be narrower. In addition, a rule that makes goalies fair game outside of the crease is long overdue. Either that, or a rule that forbids the goaltenders from playing the puck behind the red line since that is a key part of shitty boring defensive strategies. Funny thing is, the goaltending in this year's playoffs has been pretty mediocre so far. Lots of goals from relatively long distances and tight angles going in without much pressure preceding them. The Wings' goals against the Lightning have almost all been like that.

Not much point in pining for it though. The league doesn't think that it's a problem. So prepare for the inevitable commentary in about a decade about how Connor Macdavid's scoring is way down because now he's more responsible and plays defense.

                    • I agree Hannibal, I grew up on Oiler run-n-gun and there was nothing more exciting.

As for Pittsburgh's woes Talent, self-inflicted and expect their GM Rutherford to get fired along with coach Johnson when they get bounced after The Presidents' Trophy winning Blue shirts dispense them in 5.

Firing Bylsma and Shero was a huge mistake just like trading 40+ goal scorer James Neal to Nashville for nothing?!?! He now enjoys playing on the Predator's first line. Their new defensive philosophy is a pile of crap, Malkin missed half the season and is a playoff mess, Latang gone for the season with a concussion and 6-7 starters injured including their 2 best D-men. Team can't score for the last 1/3 of the season and work too hard for what they net.

Facing Lundqvist in goal doesn't help either!

They will take a serious run at Babcock too IMO.

                      • I don't think that Babcock would be a good fit for them. Crosby rules the roost there and they would probably clash.

                        • During the 2010 & 2014 Olympics Babcock had nothing but gushing praise for SC and the 2 appeared to establish a special bond that the media even picked up, there has been ongoing speculation that he would very much like to coach Crosby in the NHL.

In the end , he probably stays with Detroit while enjoying a huge pay increase.

                          Crosby/Babcock rumors?

                          • It's one thing to spend two weeks with the guy in a tournament that doesn't really mean jack shit in the big scheme of things. It's another to spend a few years with him. Babcock is a hardass and likes to play mind games with guys when they aren't playing well. Crosby won't respond to that postively when he is on the receiving end.
