  • Looks like the Colorado Avalanche have found their "Jimmy Harbaugh"! Patrick Roy is off to 10-1 start in the NHL as a rookie coach, an amazing start. Roy simply reeks of success at every hockey level.

Although they fired their coach last year and Colorado had made the playoffs only once over the last 5 years. Obviously great players don't always make good coaches but their are several NHL GMs kicking themselves now.

Roy was the greatest goalie I ever saw play the game. His list of accomplishments are truly remarkable.

      • Pens stop their 3 game skid with a win over the Hurricanes. Checkout the pass by the GPITW (Crosby) on the game winner, Pens 2nd goal, he is seeing the ice like Gretzky, unreal.

          • Great gut-check win. They needed that. Record is still a respectable 7-4-2 with the mini-slump.

                  • The Vancouver "winning" goal was a 60 foot joke, rolling Calgary and Edmonton was impressive, let's see how they do against Winnipeg tonight, shitload of travel I should know grew up in Western Canada which according to OT makes me an asshole....truth of the matter is they are the finest people in North America!

Gordie Howe, Steve Yzerman and OP are Western Canadians....shame the Sedin sisters re-sign with the Canucks, 4 years, 28.5M, was looking forward to sending them to Motown to join Team IKEA.......becoming Mike's problem.

Nice to see that Luongo still sucks, though.

                      • Of the 840 Detroit Red Wings' roster, (all-time) 648 are/were Canadian. Excluding Ed Hatoum who was born in Beirut, Lebanon but grew up in Ottawa , Ontario. You are welcome.

Best I have ever seen, and the fiercest competitor that really compares to no one in the NHL. And his goalie is just like him - well sadly off the ice. Varlamov is facing charges of second-degree kidnapping and third-degree assault after an incident Monday, According to the police report, Varlamov allegedly kicked Vavrinyuk, stomped on her, dragged her around the house. I wonder if Roy showed him how to knock a door down to get to her?

"Why wait?" Avs coach Patrick Roy said after the morning skate, according to The Denver Post. "We're all aware of what happened, but we just feel that he's our guy. We have confidence in him and feel that it's good for him to play tonight."

The Avs have played 13 games; they are now riding their second six-game winning streak. Even with distractions they keep winning. This is bordering on insane.

                            • Those dirty Russians! The outcome for Varlamov remains to be seen, but for now he remains the Avalanche’s starting goalie. It could be weeks or months until his case goes to trial, so they aren’t in a hurry to shop for goaltending insurance.

Jets dump Wings 4-2, but winning 3 of 4 on the road, nicely done. Luongo gets beat in the most embarrassing fashion. He will be on Sochi, no doubt.

Speaking of which, thought Fleury's career was done given his epic meltdown in the playoffs last spring. Pens fire Gilles Meloche, their goaltending coach, hire Mike Bales, send Fleury to head shrink.....now hottest goalie in the League. He is 10-2 -- the only NHL goalie to reach double-digits in victories -- with a 1.83 goals-against average and save percentage of .929.

If he continues at this pace, he will be tough for Steve Yzerman to ignore and may end up on Team Canada at the Olympics. Stevie Y has publicly stated there are 9 or so locks on the Team, the hottest guys playing in the NHL will fill the roster.

The NHL will break in early February, 25-man roster will fly 1/2 around the world to BFE, Russia, have 3 practices as a team then begin Tournament play (3 games) followed by the sudden-death medal round! One or two bad goals and kiss your Gold Medal goodbye!

Watch those bastard Russians, man-for-man their Team will a good but not Soviet-like, questionable goaltending and young D. However they will take their NHL best as well as many as 16 skaters from the KHL, logic being they will play 5 months in that time zone, in a short Tournament where groups of All-Stars are expected to jell as team might be the Dark Horse!

Yzerman was born in B.C. but grew up in suburban Ottawa. He played junior in Peterborough. I would not classify him as a western Canadian.
