  • I know oh too well Packy, I would have preferred Dave Semanko but already too old.

Hanson Brother Steve Carlson talking Trash about Hockey 2008
“I would like to see Brian Burke as the Commissioner of the National Hockey League. He understands the game. I believe they should let the players decide their instigating fighting should not be punishable. I believe that once a player takes a run at your super star player, that here comes in my day, the Dave Semankos, the Gord Lanes, the Clark Gillies come out there and punish the boy that touched your Brian Trottier or Mike Bossy. Let them score. Trust me, when you see someone like a Dave Semanko (or a laundry list of other names he mentioned that I had no clue who they were) come at you, you’re going to think twice before you do it.”

    • As you can tell hockey and toughness, I can always throw the Bob Probert card :-) And yes, he is one of Detroit favorites athletes of all time. Your buddy - the hot head Jamie H and me had it out about that. For some reason he thought Probert was no big deal around here?

Of course we all know how that ends! Tournament MVP Gretzky and scoring champ (21 pts) thinks it's his best effort, ever. At the time, the Soviets were the best team in the World, KLM line, unreal.

Gretzky toys with Swedes in the Semis, takes them apart.

          • Probie was the best IMO, he was feared League-wide.

Is very necessary. They also need to eliminate the trapezoid and simply not allow the goaltender to touch the puck behind the net. Make your defense get the damn dump-in.

                    • I believe all three recommendations were ratified and will be implemented this fall, I like them.

This is not your Grandfathers NHL. The speed and physicality of the game are different. Players are bigger and stronger, and because of that everything is happening at a faster pace. In an effort to keep their players safe, and keep fans happy, the NHL is looking to change things up for the 2013-2014 season. There are three rule changes that are awaiting the Board of Governors approval.

                      1. Mandatory Visors, With a rash of head injuries, the NHL is looking to make visors mandatory. This rule would have a Grandfather clause. Any player that played in 25 games during the 2012-2013 season (regular season and playoffs combined) would not need to use a visor. All rookies, and other players would need follow the new rule. ( Approximately 73 percent of NHL players wore visors this season)

?There were multiple incidents in 2013 where a player was hit with the puck, and one player even had his visor shattered. bleacherreport.com?

                      2. Hybrid Icing, I am a big fan of this change. Hybrid icing is a drag race to the face off dot. It will give fans a hard skated race to negate an icing call with out the risk of seeing your teams player go feet or head first into the end boards. Not only is this a player safety rule, it should help scoring as well. With the new icing rules team will be more likely to use the boards and glass to clear the puck. Intern we should see increases in Delay of Game calls; leading to more Power Play time for your favorite team. ?In the event of a potential icing violation, the play will be blown dead if a defending player is the first to reach the end zone face-off dots, provided the puck has crossed the goal line at that point.?

                      3. Shallower Nets, This sounds minimal until you give it some thought. By making the nest shallow it allows players to have more room behind the nets. Wayne Gretzky would have loved this rule. I think this rule will have a greater effect on Power Play scoring. There will be no changes to the front of the net, players will still have a 4?6 area to shot at.
The NHL doesn?t have a lot of choices, they need to start adapting to todays game and players. Every league needs to grow, and change at some point; for the NHL the time is now.
                      ?I don?t take vacations. I don?t get sick. I don?t observe major holidays. I?m a jackhammer.?

                      • IIRC they already moved the net out from the back about 15 years ago, and it had basically no effect. IMHO they need to make the pads smaller. The pads should serve no purpose besides to protect the goaltender from injury. That's the way that it was up until about the mid-90s, when they became Michelin Men.

                        Comment

                        • Agreed, they are dealing with the length of the pad which is not the issue, it is the width. Reduce the total width of each pad by 25 - 35% without jeprodizing goalie saftey...they have been cheating for years.

                          • Ban the man made materials in pads and make them go back to wearing leather. Get those soaked and they'll slow down
