Yzerman has signed five players since free agency began Friday. joining forward Bobby Ryan (one year, $1 million), defensemen Jon Merrill (one year, $925,000) and Troy Stecher (two years, $3.4 million) and goaltender Thomas Greiss (two years, $7.2 million).

Another low price negotiated by Yzerman. Things are moving in the right direction.


Yzerman is the clear-cut winner of the biggest trade deadline deal he made last spring.

He dumped Athanasiou on Ken Holland in exchange for two second-round picks and Sam Gagner lol Holland, gambled on Athanasiou and lost. Sportsnet’s Mark Spector tweeted Tuesday night Holland is done with Athanasiou

So does this all mean that Yzerman is a good choice as Wings' GM?

The Best! Even with the bullshit the NHL has put on Yzerman in the draft, total joke changing the draft rule when Wings won 17 games all year and a playoff team gets the the first pick?


The roster has changed 1/3 than it did eight months ago. While keeping the nucleus (Dylan Larkin, Anthony Mantha, Tyler Bertuzzi, Filip Hronek) to establish a winning culture after experiencing so much losing the past few years. Players have even said FA's want to play for the Red Wings (Yzerman) again.


Deeper at forward, better on defense, upgraded at goal. Red Wings parted ways with forwards Justin Abdelkader (finally) Christoffer Ehn and Brendan Perlini, defensemen Jonathan Ericsson (thank God), Trevor Daley and Madison Bowey, and goalie Jimmy Howard (I liked Howard , but his time was up).

Look for another rough year but better next year, 2 years from now I expect we will be playoff contenders.

The Wings are going to be abysmal next year. Just as bad if not worse then this year.

I don't think it will be as bad, but make no mistake Yzerman is building through the draft and that will take time. Giving low risk, short term deals is the way to go, not lifetime achievement deals to players who fall off a cliff in year 2 of a 5-7 year deal.

Yzerman providing optimism as Red Wings rebuild roster

Recent moves show path forward for GM, who helped shape Lightning into champions

Steve Yzerman has generated more optimism the past three weeks than the Detroit Red Wings have had since … well, since he took over as general manager April 19, 2019.

He has passion, patience and a plan, and though the Red Wings are still early in their rebuilding process, you can see the path forward based on the NHL Draft, free agency and trades.

Start with the trade that brought defenseman Marc Staal and a second-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft from the New York Rangers for future considerations Sept. 26.

Detroit had space under the NHL salary cap; New York needed cap relief. So the Red Wings seized the opportunity to fill a need on their roster and acquire an asset for the future. Staal is signed for one more season, so there is no long-term commitment. He should be motivated to play well. Perhaps he could be flipped for another asset at the NHL Trade Deadline. Even better, Detroit got each on a short-term contract, taking advantage of a unique situation with the salary cap flat at $81.5 million for this season and the economic outlook uncertain.

Goalie Thomas Greiss for two years. Defenseman Jon Merrill for one year, defenseman Troy Stecher for two years. Forward Bobby Ryan for one, Vladislav Namestnikov for two.

The Red Wings have flexibility and the potential to make more trades for assets ahead of the next two trade deadlines. In the short term, their prospects have time to develop at lower levels and aren't necessarily blocked from earning a spot in Detroit.


In Detroit, that's fantastic to hear.

The Red Wings with $9,538,611 in projected cap space.

Yzerman somehow managed to lock Mantha in without signing him for any non-prime years while also buying 2 UFA years at a phenomenal value. This is the difference Yzerman makes as GM in Detroit over Ken Holland. Mantha will only be 30 at the end of this contract.

Eh. I wouldn't call that a steal. Market value maybe. He needs to have a breakout season (35+ goals).
