Doc, same experience ...... I played a ton of back-yard hockey on the small lakes around Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills. We had gloves and shin guards and beat the absolute crap out of each other playing 5 on 5 rotations. I thought I was good.
I thought I was a really good skater.
Mike don't laugh .... I had a really nice pair of figure skates (my Mom thought I should do that and signed me up for lessons. I hated it. I would rather knock the snot out of someone on the lake!). So, I found pairs of beat up hockey skates here and there and would put those on and skate up a storm.
I tried out for the M Hockey team in 1964 when I was a Freshman. I remember thinking I'm as good as any of these guys. Well, I wasn't even close to all those Canucks. They had skating moves and wrist shots, natural to them, that I had never even seen. They also knew how to muscle in the box to get the puck behind the goalie - a skill I was never good at because I was skinny. I could skate and shoot outside but that's only a 10th of the game. So, yeah, needless to stay, I left the rink with my tail between my legs.
I did play some intramural, league hockey in Ann Arbor until I found out I liked drinking beer and chasing women more than trying to skate and stick handle better.
