  • When Michael Ferns was racing toward the end zone, the Clairsville (Ohio) St. Clairsville High star had nothing in front of him but green grass and glory. He was seemingly seconds away from scoring his 12th touchdown of the season and wrapping up a victory for St. Clairsville against area rival Richmond (Ohio) Edison High.

St. Clairsville players Logan Thompson and Michael Ferns embrace following Thompson's emotional touchdown ? USA ?

Then, just feet short of the goal line, Ferns slowed and walked out of bounds at the 1-yard line. Everyone in the stadium was stunned, except for Ferns' teammates, who instantly knew what he was doing: He was setting up a teammate to score a fitting touchdown in memory of his late father, who had died just two days earlier from a catastrophic stroke.

The player in question was Logan Thompson, a devoted freshman varsity football player who had never registered a single carry before in his career. Still reeling from his father's death, Thompson suited up for St. Clairsville nonetheless, providing security for the team's upperclassmen. During the team's victory against Edison, St. Clairsville coach Brett McLean had secretly encouraged his skill players to pull up short of the end zone if given the chance, setting the stage for Thompson to have a memorable first carry right into the end zone.

Still, the plan was almost sabotaged by the referees, who were completely stunned by the fact that Ferns hadn't actually scored. As reported by USA Today, two referees actually signaled that Ferns had scored a touchdown before one of his teammates came rushing in to argue that his team had not actually scored, a surreal twist on the usual officiating protestations put forth by high school players and coaches.

Eventually, McLean's plan worked to perfection when Ferns found himself on a breakaway, then switched rolls to move from running back to bruising fullback for Thompson's cameo, helping clear a massive hole in the Edison line through which Thomson rolled into the end zone.

While Ferns is a highly regarded Michigan recruit, Thompson was the star of his team's victory, thanks to a touchdown that clearly meant even more to the freshman than his teammates hoped it might.

"Looking straight up into the sky after scoring my first varsity touchdown?i know the old man was watching! love and miss you so much daddy," Thompson tweeted after the victory.

Added McLean: "[Thompson's touchdown run] was something that touched the whole team. Logan was going through so much and for a few minutes we helped him get his mind off of things. It honored his dad. It was just an awesome moment."

    • Wow that's an awesome story to come out of such an unfortunate situation.

        • If Saban does go the Browns, I could see Meyer heading to 'Bama ... but I don't think he would do that without accomplishing something at Ohio.

None of this going to happen anyways... Saban isn't headed anywhere. He's had his taste of the NFL.

          • Saban is not going to the NFL. He was surprised that the NFL lets the other teams pay the players too

            • Saban is already coaching a pro team in Tuscaloosa. In fact the Tide's payroll is probably larger than the Browns ...

              • WM Wol,

RB Derrick Green will be in AA this weekend for the MSU match. Realistically, as this is your bailiwick, where do we stand with him?

He still heads to Auburn & CLemson? Was at Tennessee, FLA on the horizon?

                • Per mgoblog, the next commit could be 6'9" (!) OT Denzel Ward. Is this guy too tall to play in the trenches?

                  • M is the favorite for Derrick Green but not a particularly strong one. Insiders are thinking he's 40% M, 50% between Auburn/Clemson, 10% rest the field... After this weekend, M has a chance to really stand out with him. Like usual, we'll know a lot more after his official visit...

Glad M is still held in high regard in Illinois. Could pay off with Ward who is a top 100-150 overall talent. Lots of other talent in Illinois too which is a good thing since M & Ohio aren't as strong as usual.

Jumbo Elliot and Greg Skrepnak were both 6'7". I think they are the tallest at Michigan.

                      • They could play the O-line without too much difficulty. Probably OT.

I imagine that after football season is over, Coach Beilein might like to talk to him ...

                        • I see both Green and Treadwell taking all their official visits. Ward is returning to the game vs Sparty (unofficial, last week was official) along with his buddy Logan Tuley-Tillman. Sounds like M is up a few touchdowns in his recruitment.

                          • How tall can you be before you can't get low enough to play O-line?

                            • Michigan picks up a 2014 OL commitment today. Its the big 6'9" kid from Chicago, Denzel Ward.

                              Story:

Michigan picked up its second verbal commitment in the 2014 class when Chicago offensive lineman Denzel Ward pledged to the Wolverines Saturday ...

The 6-9, 285-pound lineman held an offer from Purdue and earned his offer from Michigan last weekend, he told Rivals.com's EdgyTim.

"It's been really crazy ever since I got the offer from Michigan," Ward told EdgyTim last Sunday. "My Twitter has been blowing up ever since and I've been getting a ton of phone calls. It's really exciting to get an offer from Michigan and it's all still sort of surreal to be honest."

Ward attended the Michigan-Illinois game and was blown away by his experience.

"This was the first time I've even been to Michigan," he told EdgyTim. "I went to the game and had a chance to meet and hang out with some of the commits and some of the players and the other prospects. I was able to see all the facilities and I also toured the campus.

"The Big House was also really amazing and everything at Michigan was just really nice. They had a blowout win over Illinois and the crowd was huge and really into the game. It was the biggest and loudest crowd I've ever seen in my life.

"Getting an offer from Michigan is still amazing to me. They have been one of my dream schools for a long time and it's just really exciting right now."

Ward joins Ohio linebacker Michael Ferns as 2014 recruits.
