  • I don't think '11 was lousy. We had prolly 3-4 key conributors as true freshman and will be multiple year starters with good futures. That in addition to a few who played and provided decent depth.

    • '11 class has already lost Kellen Jones, Chris Barnett, Tony Posada and Greg Brown to attrition; that from an already small and mediocre class (#21 at rivals). It might turn out to be productive (Countess, Bryant, F Clark, D Morgan, etc.) but I don't see many blue chippers who are going to be All B10 types.

Also not a lot of these kids redshirted due to need, a lot of them are going to be 4-year instead of 5-year recruits. That'll only hurt in '15 not having some of them for a 5th year. If M recruits at a high enough level in '12, '13, etc. that won't be an issue.

      • Nitpicking here, but Jones will be more than replaced with the class of LBers we have coming, as will Posada who probably wasn't going to play anway. And some of our recruits responsible for our low ranking(Morgan, Ryan and Clark) were some of the biggest contributors.

          • Rivals is reporting that dunn, after learning of the NCAA sanctions, "isn't interested in (another) decomitt." He's made up his mind and is sticking with osu. This based on reports from several friends of dunn that Rivals has contacted.

Move on. There are other fish in the tank.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

            • Jake Ryan is '10, a class that I thought was pretty strong despite not filling some holes.

              • Most recruits aren't going to see much playing time in their first year anyways, so I don't think a one-year bowl ban ends up having a huge impact on recruiting. Scholie losses will. And the loss of extra practices with a young team will be a detriment as well

                • Neither will hurt. It's a slap on the wrist.

                  • The 82 is a manageable number. The bowl ban, obviously has zero impact on the 2013 class. It will probably impact the way the 2012 class closes a bit -- in that UFM won't get any ridiculous pulls. But that's about it. Well, it will also cost OSU a B10 title, but that's not really recruiting related.

                    • well, depending on how many years Meyer lasts at Ohio, a "lost" year could be a big deal ... I wouldn't dismiss it so readily.

                      Comment

                      • Fair point, Pasadena. FWIW, I'm not particularly concerned about UFM leaving "early". The better point, tbh, is that it takes a bowl game away from the Braxton Miller Era. Meh.

Also, from what I've read from "insiders" -- UFM was livid -- not with the NCAA, but with Gene Smith. Join the crowd.

It's impossible to know what the NCAA would have done had OSU self-imposed a bowl ban. It might be that the NCAA was dead set on F'n OSU in 2012, so it wouldn't have mattered. But we'll never know. And that should cost Gene Smith his job. In fact, it's been 15 hours, and I'm not sure why he still has it.

Its his ability to raise money. Period. I don't know if Smith has Brandonitis or Brandon has Smithitis. Nothing is more important than the almighty dollar for these two, not that this mindset is limited to them alone. It is the fundamental problem in college athletics. Either AD would bayonet tethered puppies if they thought it would bring more cash into the coffers. The amount of cash brought in under Smith's tenure keeps him firmly in place.

                              • That's the thing -- he's NOT particularly good at raising money. I've heard he's middle of the road (in contrast, Gee is very good). As far as I can, he's not particularly good at anything and downright terrible at numerous tasks fundamental to his job performance.
