  • Sean, I hope we can meet some time this fall. It sounds like your sister and my grandson are working in similar fields. His curriculum at Purdue was called “biological engineering” and was under the supervision of the chemical engineering dept. Now he is at Northwestern and we have talked about getting together for the M-NU game if we can find some tickets and I can get free. I would love to get him to the borg tailgate if it materializes.

Eric is working on a process to synthesize proteins using yeast products in a cell free environment that can be utilized in vaccine production in a far more efficient way than is currently available.

This whole shift in graduate education between practical and theoretical emphases is really interesting and I think it is indeed becoming widespread among many disciplines.

    • Wow, I didn't realize so many on this board were engineers! Congrats!

      • Shane Morris had a great game on Friday, right across the street from Michigan Stadium. His De LaSalle team beat Pioneer 43-28.

From The Wolverine: Friday night, Morris led the Pilots to an opening-weekend victory over Ann Arbor Pioneer, 43-28. He went 12-of-15 for 233 yards and a touchdown in the first half. With a 36-9 halftime lead, Morris threw just two passes in the second half, one incompletion and one that led to a pass-interference penalty.

With his team leading 7-6 in the first quarter, Morris missed on a third-and-long pass. The Pioneers then pinned De La Salle inside the three-yard line on a great punt.

On third and nine from the four, Morris dropped back, avoided a heavy blitz, rolled out and threw a dart to the 45-yard line.

"I just saw a guy running at me, so I took off, turned back around and saw my receiver matched up with a little guy, and I threw it up to him," Morris said. "He made an amazing catch, and it sparked out offense."

Two plays later, Morris hit receiver Marc Wouters on a post route for a 42-yard score.

Over the rest of the first and second quarter, Morris connected on 11-straight passes, including two that set up one-yard touchdown plunges. He also tacked on 27 yards rushing.

        • Shane Morris looking like a 5-star for next season. Type of recruit to build a class around, need blue chip 'skill' position (RB, WR) talent around him...

With a very large, strong class in '12, M can afford to be picky in '13. They won't send out a ton of offers and will have more specific targets/needs to fill.

          • Rivals has re-ranked their Top 100. As expected. Pipkins has shot up there like a rocket.

            • His talent isn't far from those of a 5-star, really like his talent/skills. Getting Danny O'Brien with him would solidify M as having one of the top 3-4 DL classes.

              • Garnett, Banner story that ran here yesterday. Local angle of course with lots of other names but worth a look. Nothing new really though.

                • Dennis---any chance you'll be coming into Michigan during football season? Better yet, during September or October this year or next when the Tigers are still "in season"? You make it back to Ann Arbor and I'll do my best (within reason) to line up a ticket or two to The Big House for some Meeeeeeechigan Football.

                  • I'd love to Rob but no A2 this year. I'll be back this year from Sep 13 to 21. A couple days in Chicago with Tigers and White Sox and RobbyT, then heading up north for my annual golf trip with buddies at Garland, then a few days visiting cousins on the way back. You still near Kazoo? There's a chance we could meet up one night and tip one. Or come on and meet us in Chicago.

                    • Let me get back to you on that ASAP, Dennis---I'll probably email you later this weekend once my schedule for the next 2 weeks shakes out. Which Tiger's games are you guys hitting?

                      • Jamie H:

I have one college credit in slide-rule. I'll never forget the first time I saw a calculator. We had to sign in to use it. The limiting factor in most sciences at that time was that slide rules only have at most 3 significant places, and finding square roots was necessary in most calculations.

                        • Rob, my flight gets in Tuesday the 13th but too late to go to the game so we'll be at a sports bar for that one. Going to the game on Wed the 14th, a day game. RT may already have tickets, I'm not sure, but I'm sure we could work something out. If you can figure out how to get to Chicago, I can give you a ride back and drop off near Kazoo/Grand Rapids as I'll be heading that way anyway on my way to Gaylord.

Apologies to all for the non recruiting talk.

                          • Note to Danny O'Brien: There's room to come in and contribute soon.

                            • No kidding. Could we have a couple of true freshman DT starters next year?

                              • If O'Brien comes, you could see both him and Pipkins starting.
