  • Not new news but Aaron Burbridge WR (4*, from Michigan) is down to just M and MSU. He has offers from ND, OSU among others.

    • Sounds like a lock.

      • M needs receivers but Hoke is going to be picky with who he takes, he felt M has too many numbers there; which is why he didn't pursue any in '11 when he could've had some that he wanted to be Wolverines. Supposedly M is slow playing Burbridge till he can get accepted academically, M might not have room for him by the time (after his first senior semester) his academics are in order...

I really like the talent level of Burbridge, he's rated close to where he belongs and could contribute very early.

        • Hanni, sounds like you're essentially writing Gardner off when there's a good chance he has 4 years of eligibility left? Doesn't make much sense.

          • Burbridge is supposedly coming to the BBQ this weekend at the Big House. At least I think I saw that on mgoblog recently.

I agree. As one who was predicting impending doom if Forcier hadn't been M's starter last year instead of Denard (who I thought was not really a QB) and then seeing how wrong I was, I'm willing to wager that there is more to Gardner that what we have seen so far!

              • I'm not completely writing Gardner off, but I'm not feeling too good about his long term chances either.

                • I have to agree with Hanni here. The problem for M is that they have not recruited an elite QB since Ryan Mallet. This is not a knock on Gardner or DR but neither of these guys are good fits in the kind of offense Borges knows how to run and will default to in the end. He needs a pro-style QB.

M missed on all of the elite grade HS QBs this recruiting period. I also don't think the Shane Morris situation is optimal as he is going to get rushed into playing early and will likely miss an opportunity to red-shirt. Obviously, this leaves Gardner to take over in 2013 with Russel Bellomy (2011) and a green Morris behind him.

IMO, missing out on a QB in the 2012 class is going to bite Borges/Hoke in the butt come 2013 ..... unless and of course Gardner turns out to be Cam Newtonesque minus the bank account. I also think that not having a highly ranked pro-style QB to attract WRs in 2012,13,14 is going to hurt that unit' recruiting too.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

                  • Gardner supposedly is likely to get his redshirt and will be a senior in '14...

re: recruiting WR's. Missing out on a mediocre QB in '12 won't hurt M in terms of recruiting WR's, Shane Morris spot as a top 2-3 QB recruit will really help in recruiting WR's in '13/'14.

                    • I think everyone's lack of faith in Gardner is surprising. He was very highly ranked, and was an effective passer after getting some practice.

                      • I'm not down on Gardner and I don't think Hanni implies that either.

But I don't think he is a standout performer based on the limited times I've seen him play. The other thing we don't know yet is how good is the QB coaching vis-a-vis Borges' intended offense? I just see the potential for more problems with the QB position than I see potential for greatness. If I've got this right, Borges does not need a journeyman QB in his system like say tressel did in his .... a game manager like Craig Krenzel. A WC type O needs a star in there to bring the offense to an elite level. Gardner? Probably not.

                        • After what we saw last year from Denard after his looking so bad in the "limited times we've seen him play" before that, you'd think folks wouldn't judge Gardner on what, 10 snaps?

                          • Devin Gardner was more highly ranked than Maty Mauk and the equal of Zeke Pike. He was a five star QB on Scout, and the 5th overall ranked QB.

I'll give him a chance to be pretty darn good.

                            • btw, who knows, he may not develop, but IMO thats more on the coaching (and his level of work) than his talent level.

                              • I don't see how anyone can judge Gardner yet. Geez, the guy has hardly played. Even freshman who are the clear-cut starters tend to struggle, let alone guys who come off the bench for a few plays here and there.

We never even saw Tom Brady play until he had been in the program for several years. Can we at least wait until Gardner has some significant playing time to evaluate him?
