LOL, but it's true.
To carry out the analogy, however, if Dresden was carpeted in 39 and not 45, and Fat Man and Little Boy unleashed in 39 and not 45, you have an equivalent. Hell -- make that 1933, when Hitler took the job. LC was railroading RR from the moment RR was hired.

I'm as big of a fan of Michigan football as anyone, but let's not forget that Lloyd was simply a grumpy fucking curmudgeon who consistently underachieved in the second half of his career. Some people here like to think he was the only shining beacon in the night of the corrupt world of college football, but there are (were) plenty of others that played by the rules too.
Fact is, he couldn't get it done anymore and recognized it and left. That's great, I respect him for that. But I'm not going to hold him in the same regard as George Patton or some other stupid comparison. Yes, he was a leader of men, but so are VPs and Division managers of corporations all over the US. These men have a far greater impact on the lives of others than some dude who coaches the X's and O's to a bunch of 18-22 year olds. Get some perspective.

The football/war analogy is an old one.
the coach of Michigan football tries to get a bunch of kids to move a ball from one side of the field to the other. Think about that for a minute, because that's all he does and gets paid millions of dollars to do it.
Athletics generates billions of dollars in revenue, those who are proficient at providing leadership are valuable to their institutions/franchises and deserve to be compensated for it.
Lloyd Carr was a great man and leader of this institution for years, part of "consistently underachieved in the second half of his career" was measured because he lost to O-Lie-O, now we see why, because Tressel was a cheater.Last edited by whodean; July 12, 2011, 05:03 PM.Atlanta, GA

My point is that these people shouldn't be placed on a pedestal. Pretty simple point.
Let's take a look at the flip side of Jim Tressel's dirtiness. I would be willing to bet that Saint Jim's winning streak got lots of wealthy folks to open up their checkbooks and donate millions to OSU for programs besides athletics. Even though he was a cheater, those dollars are going to good causes because some kids got free tattoos and sold some jewelry (that they should have been able to sell otherwise). Do you want OSU to give it all back. I don't think so.

whodean, Lloyd Carr lost a lot more games than OSU in the second half of his career. Look at his stellar BCS bowl record, those 7-5 seasons, 8-4 seasons, with a top ten recruiting class talent. Just cuz some kids got some tattoos didn't mean they cheated on the field. Lloyd couldn't win the big games at the end of his career and everyone knew it. Don't go putting in your revisionist history and making him out to be better than he was as a coach.
