If you haven't seen this it's by mgo's Alex Drain. He's authored a well written and convincing piece describing where M football's 2023 recruiting is and why it is where it is (not good). One of the best parts of the article is Alex's view of NIL and its impact on recruiting in general and on M specifically. Great read if you have the time. It's long.
It's been a little while since we checked in on Michigan Football recruiting, not since the bye week roughly seven weeks ago. The second-half of the season has consumed most of our time with content, but now getting a break before the Fiesta Bowl, it's time to check back in on recruiting, especially with the early signing day coming up very soon. This piece will go over recent updates on the 2023 class, talk about the remaining targets, check in quickly on 2024, and then move into a long monologue about the state of recruiting and answer some pressing questions you may have. One more note: next week I'll begin pumping out Hellos for all the kids we've missed, so that is coming soon. Recent Updates on 2023 Well, a lot has happened since the last update, so let's try and get everyone up to speed. You can classify this into two categories, the good and the bad: BAD Michigan lost out on several OT prospects they liked, Spencer Fano and Caleb Lomu, both of whom opted to stay out west. OG DJ Chester also chose to stay in the south, picking LSU Top Michigan DT target Kayden McDonald picked Ohio State over Michigan Top Michigan CB target Chris Peal picked Georgia over Michigan EDGE Commit Collins Acheampong flipped to Miami from Michigan GOOD Michigan nabbed 3* OG Nathan Efobi from the Atlanta area, a prospect some see as high as the top 150 range, while others rate much lower Michigan flipped 3* CB Cameron Calhoun from Cincinnati, beating out Kentucky in the process Michigan has made additional in-roads into Ohio, picking up 3* LB Breeon Ishmail from Cincinnati and 3* defensive ATH Jason Hewlett from Youngstown The bad was not terribly surprising outside of the Acheampong flip, which was fueled by a messy personal life situation that fueled Acheampong's desire to seek a more NIL-friendly school. Fano and Lomu picking Utah was more geographic and religious-focused than anything else and the others were lost to schools who have much more to offer financially... for several reasons, Michigan is not winning many battles against other blue blood programs (something I'll dig into later). The good was decent. Nothing particularly groundbreaking, but Michigan has begun making more in-roads into Ohio than they have at any point since Brady Hoke was the coach by picking up Ishmail, Calhoun, and Hewlett. They still have another Ohio target on the board in D'Juan Waller, but these pickups seem to be laying the groundwork for a strong push into the Buckeye State for 2024. Calhoun in particular is a prospect I like and Hewlett has pretty high upside. If we're talking about guys to take chances on, these aren't the worst ideas. As for Efobi, he is a prospect that is pretty divisive among the rankings services but I defer to Sherrone Moore's judgement. This staff has earned that right. In the national rankings, the class sits 22nd to On3 and 19th to 24/7. Why is this lower than we want? Keep reading and I'll get into that later. But first, a look at the targets left on the board. [AFTER THE JUMP: Closing 2023, targets in 2024, and what's up with NIL?]Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. Right now, you're either all in on NIL or you're fighting upstream. Ohio State is not all in. They are playing by the "rules." I think most B10 teams are. That's going to get you killed. So, instead of outright paying kids big dollars upfront, OSU (and presumably M) point to how much money you can make if you're a good player there. So, you know, point to CJ Stroud and his $3M in deals and other players and say the "money WILL be there" vs "here's a fuckton of money."
Ohio State needs a stud DE. They are the clear favorite of the #1 DE in the country -- Damon Wilson -- and edge rusher from Florida. The kid is the number 1 kid on Kirby's board. It's been a Georgia/OSU fight for months with Ohio State being the favorite in all traditional senses. The kid loves the culture, the program, etc. He likes Georgia, but they've been behind. However, Georgia has come up with an NIL deal of AT LEAST $1.5M for year 1 and $3M for year 2. So, OSU is going to lose him. And I don't blame him (or Georgia). That IS the game now. Play by those "rules" or lose.
There's a QB from South Dakota Ohio State would like as a nice "in between" kid for the 2023 class -- they have a stud in 2022 and a superstar in 2024. They're trying to flip him from Washington. He wants OSU b/c OSU does things with QBs -- even if you transfer, you're still well-taught. I guess. Whatever. Anyway, Washington is offering $250K to sign. WASHINGTON.
Ohio State and M both have lots of monied boosters, but we're going to get into the land of "it just means more" -- the SEC slogan. While OSU/M boosters may want to spend their money on libraries and facilities, SEC boosters -- and make no mistake, SEC schools have lots of big dollar boosters -- they want to spend on football.
Then you throw in the Portal and the very, very high likelihood that some kids are being approached and offered deals WHILE THEY'RE STILL AT OTHER SCHOOLS!
It's really bad. The game we grew up with and loved -- it's changed a lot -- but it's about to be completely and totally redone w/ expansion, NIL and the portal.Last edited by iam416; December 10, 2022, 07:36 AM.Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?
Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.

It's the wild west of CFB. This is a situation where the coaches are not going to agree on a set of reasonable rules. That's because nobody, for example, in the SEC is going to budge on any advantages they have when the BIG argues, "hey, we need rules to level the playing field." This is where the NCAA could form a committee of disinterested (in outcomes from NIL and portal deals) parties - lawyers and such - to come up with some rules that enforce a sort of ordered process. It's a reach for sure asking the NCAA to come up with anything like this. It's just not in their culture. But, if something doesn't happen to regulate the portal and NIL, it's going to destroy CFB as a meaningful undertaking for college athletes and a form of sports entertainment.Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished.
