    • This has already been done dozens of times. Whenever this evidence is offered you counter by twisting into a ten-dimensional Moebius Strip of intellectual knots and prevarications.

      • Hannibal's unassailable logic is that if a recruit picks M they're clean if they don't they're not.

Recruits only choose schools based on money. Unless they choose M.

        • I have seen no testimony. No disgruntled ex-player telling his story to Behind The Lines. Just some cars that are easy enough to explain. Cars whose sources were vetted by compliance.

          • Anyway, it's almost always clear when a recruit has his hand out. Stroud is being recruited by OSU and UGa so he has his hand out. I'm just puzzled by why M would recruit a player with his hand out.

The upside is that M won't land him so they'll be able to continue their tropes and such. Always valiant and noble in defeat.

            • Heh. I am NOT going to rehash this again. Have a great day gentlemen. No profit in any of this.

Because none of it is criminal and the NCAA can't compel testimony. If Ed Martin had been a legitimate businessman instead of a criminal underworld figure, then I could sit here and say that the entire Fab Five era was on the up-and-up, and you wouldn't have any evidence to contradict me (other than inner city Detroit kids driving brand new Ford Explorers and throwing around gigantic wads of cash, which you have already disqualified as evidence).

Most guys aren't going to be disgruntled about getting payola against the rules. Duh. It's not like the players are getting screwed over if they take $50,000 at school X instead of school Y.

And in the case of OSU, there were actual disgruntled players, non-disgruntled players who were too dumb to keep their mouths shut, a paper trail showing the coach's knowledge and subsequent cover-up of the payola train, prior malfeasance by the coach at his previous job, and a mountain of additional evidence. You have to get six standard deviations away from Occam's Razor to arrive at any conclusion other than that Jim Tressell was a serial cheater who gained a competitive advantage by cheating.

LMAO at "compliance". Compliance is not running credit checks to make sure that you have assets and it is not being done by independent third parties. If you know anything about the concept of compliance outside of the college sports world then you know that the college sports version of the concept would get laughed out of the room in any other institution.

                • It seems like Michigan had a better argument when they had Hoke than Harbaugh. When you introduce over-signing, pulling scholarships at the last second and processing kids out of the school you're not as valiant and noble as Brian Cook may suggest.

                      • If I was a rich M booster, I'd go full SMU mode and hand out burner cards like they were penny candy.

Of course, I'd be the only booster of any team in the country that was doing such a dastardly thing ... curse my blood!!

                        • One of the first things Ryan Day did as head coach of OSU is raid the Michigan Wolverines for two of it's best recruiters. Give credit where credit is due, he needed coaches that were going to buy players so he knew exactly where to go.

                          • Where are you getting your information? According to 247 Mattison was way past his prime.

Don Brown and Chris Partridge are the ones recruiting for Michigan (13 players) while Mattison had 1 before he went down south.

Mattison is listed #87 in the B10 before he went to osu and Washington I cant even see on this list.

Though I don't follow recruiting much,

                            Hafley is #2

I'll let the Talent explain what this really means?

                            • Payola is happening in CFB. You two can deny all you want or shout show me the evidence.

I have no idea who benefits and who doesn't. The point is payola, when it occurs in CFB, distorts the concept of fairness in sports. It should be eliminated to the extent possible.

This takes us right to enforcement. For reasons already discussed, it's not happening and won't given the inadequacy of the NCAA to do so and the implications of the black market comparison made earlier.

Look, it took the RICO Act to root out organized crime and clean that mess up. During the Weber fiasco, Martin got caught up in an FBI investigation of illegal gambling and money laundering. His cooperation with the NCAA gave them the ammo to sanction M (something the U had already bent over for).

It would take circumstances something like this across the entirety of CFB to uncover evidence of Payola. Until that happens, it's going to be a free for all with NIL leading the way to more or less legal payments. Get out the money cannon!
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

Say what you will about the ethical considerations here but those things are not violations of NCAA rules. There are obviously different ways to benefit from breaking the rules, but not breaking them isn't one of them.

Overall, cheating is not a fixed menu of activities you do all or none of. The only constant is the rush and readiness to defend one's program when you know that's really what's happening.
