If Najee wants to play for M, they should be able to make room in this class for him.

Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

With the help of esteemed poster, Jim_S, the first edition of my best guess list has been assembled. Taking a look at the current scholarship numbers and several potential scenarios, Michigan's 2017 class has a chance to be north of 30 members and could contain multiple five-star prospects.

                  A Starting Point

Currently, Michigan has 24 available spots for the 2017 class not taking into consideration any players with remaining eligibility. The 24 takes into account running back Drake Johnson and defensive back Jeremy Clark, both of whom could get sixth years which would reduce the current number to 22. Both prospects seem a bit like long shots right now. Clark simply played in too many games this season to receive an additional redshirt year. With Johnson, Harbaugh is high on him and he's definitely a solid locker room kid, but is he really needed on the roster? Time will tell on those two.

                  Fifth-Year Seniors

Assuming 24 as the starting point, there are other potential departures on the current roster. Lets start with the fifth year seniors:

                  Running back Ty Isaac
                  Fullback Khalid Hill
                  Fullback/H-back Henry Poggi
                  Linebacker Michael McCray
                  Defensive tackle Maurice Hurst
                  Center Patrick Kugler
                  Long snapper Scott Sypniewski
                  Offensive lineman David Dawson
                  Quarterback Shane Morris
                  Quarterback John O'Korn
                  Fullback Wyatt Shallman

Of that group, Isaac, Hill, Poggi, McCray, and Hurst seem to be good bets to be welcomed back. All have contributed this season and should again next year. Hurst, of course, has an NFL decision to make, but he's been talking like someone who wants to come back to school.

Kugler, Dawson, and Sypniewski have value, but neither offensive linemen figure to play meaningful snaps and it's unclear whether Harbaugh would spend a scholarship on a long snapper.

Morris and Shallman seem like candidates to move on with O'Korn being iffy since he already transferred once and may have a chance to play some meaningful games down the stretch here in 2016.

That looks like five players who likely won't return for a fifth year, but it could be as low as three and as high as six. We'll say an additional five vacancies puts the number at 29 available spots in the 2017 class.

                  Possible Undergraduate Departures

Here's a look at some players who still have eligibility remaing but could play it out elsewhere:

                  Linebacker Jabrill Peppers
                  Quarterback Alex Malzone
                  Running back Kingston Davis
                  Running back Kareem Walker
                  Wide receiver Zach Gentry
                  Wide receiver Maurice Ways
                  Wide receiver Nate Johnson
                  Offensive lineman Mason Cole
                  Offensive lineman Jon Runyan
                  Defensive end Lawrence Marshall
                  Defensive end Shelton Johnson
                  Cornerback Keith Washington

Remember, these are just possibilities. This is not an inside-scoop list of those rumored to be leaving but the situation with each is what it is. Peppers is a first-round draft pick. Malzone has been passed over by Brandon Peters. Davis has been passed over. Walker has had trouble adjusting and may have been passed over. Gentry and Ways are struggling to find the field. Same with Johnson although he's still very young. Cole could flirt with the NFL. Runyan didn't travel to Rutgers and may be far down the depth chart. Marshall hasn't been able to contribute and Johnson is on suspension. Washington appears to have been passed over.

Also, there could always be another true freshman or two who could leave. No speculation but it seems to happen with some regularity.

From the above list it would be reasonable to assume Peppers is gone plus at least two to four others. That would created another three to five available scholarships bringing the number up to 32 to 35.

That is a huge number of total likely free spots considering the 85 cap. Next we will take a look at the 25 initial counter caps that Michigan will need to work around.

                  Initial Counters And Early Enrollees

The 25 initial counters rule is where things will get really tight and provide the more likely true limit for the class of 2017.

Michigan signed 28 true freshmen in 2016. The following of those 28 were early entrees and therefore could count toward the prior year's cap of 25 (plenty of space was available with only something like 16 signees in Harbaugh's first cycle):

                  1. Brandon Peters
                  2. Kareem Walker
                  3. Kingston Davis
                  4. Ahmir Mitchell
                  5. Carlo Kemp
                  6. Devin Bush
                  7. Sean McKeon

The total of 28 members minus seven means that there were 21 initial counters signed for the class of 2016.

Of those 21, Brad Hawkins did not qualify and went to prep school. That brings the 2016 initial counter number down to 20.

That means that Michigan has the freedom to backdate up to five of their early entrees as initial counters for the 2016 class. All other early entrees (and there could be something like 13 of them) would have to count towards the 2017 limit of 25 initial counters.

So, backdating five early entrees and signing a full class of 25 players who will be 2017 initial counters gives Michigan a total of 30 players who can be on scholarship come the start of fall drills.

                  The Best Guess List

With all of that being said, here's how the 2017 class could look:

                  QB

                  1. Dylan McCaffrey

                  RB

                  2. Najee Harris

                  3. AJ Dillon

                  WR

                  6. Nico Collins

                  7. Tarik Black
