  • Harbaugh signed about 3 kids from Alabama this year. I don't have the names right now, but I'm not sure if it qualifies as a steal or not. I guess we'll see how they pan out.

And M stole recruits from Saban? I guess Rashan Gary had an offer from every one, but who else?
It's just a picture meant to get a laugh. You're correct, satellite camps were used before Harbaugh. The article below points out that no one cared when James Franklin introduced them. I really hope he reads it.

With the NCAA ruling to ban satellite camps effective immediately on Friday, the SEC's fear of Jim Harbaugh was exposed.

Yeah, steal implies that Saban wanted them. That was my question.

No, I get the meme. It works. Franklin introduced the pro-active "tour" type thing. But I think they were in existence well before that. MAC schools come to OSU's camp (and, I assume, M's camp) to evaluate and coach kids. As far as the kids go, THAT is the real benefit of going to a big dog camp -- there will tons of chances to get noticed by a school you might actually be able to play for. Banning that stuff is just awful.

What HARBAUGH!!!! did was a publicity stunt. It worked. It drew lots of attention and poked a bear. There was a sensible way to regulate these things by, you know, say limiting them in quantity. But that was never an option for a couple reasons. Hopefully they'll do something to walk this back a little bit to at least allow for the case where MAC schools help at a Big Camp.

They're of little value to M or OSU, as I've been saying. So this ruling does little to hurt them.
Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?
        Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.

Sure, but people from Ohio seem to struggle with that sort of distinction. One way to help is to use phoneticised spellings, to simplify where possible. Use ``picshur'', or ``laff''. Increases the odds of correct interpretation.

          • I love Stanfords HC's reaction to the ruling with a big slap to the SEC's kids.

I'm great with whatever college football says, because it doesn't affect us. It doesn't make sense for us to go hold a camp someplace where there might be one person in the entire state that's eligible to get into Stanford."
            F#*K OHIO!!!

You're not only an amazingly beautiful man, but you're the greatest football mind to ever exist. <-- Jeffy Shittypants actually posted this. I knew he was in love with me.

Any theories as to why Harbaugh has not responded?

                • Mike Leach chimes in

Washington State coach Mike Leach has been among the most vocal opponents of the NCAA Council’s recent decision to eliminate satellite camps.

                  • "Those are the only two reasons, to selfishly guard your recruiting base -- and that’s the major motive -- or laziness,” he said. “OK, so we’re going to elevate those over the interests of, in particular, low-income student-athletes and providing them an opportunity? It’s by far one of the most absurd things ever. If we’re even close to who we say we are, this idealistic sport, student-athlete, college football -- if we’re even remotely close to what we say we are, that needs to be overturned immediately.”

                    • Saying "guard your recruiting base" is too micro of a reason for there to be only two reasons.
Macro view, it's all about income/money. That's a good enough reason for a lot of things, like satellite camps.

Correct. M and O-state will be able to recruit nationally quite well without the need for these camps.

I think, however, that this ban will increase the gap between the haves and the have nots in the B1G. Without the camps, JH may not be as aware of the under-the-radar recruits that he grabbed last year ... without those to target JH and other will have to focus all their energies on reeling in the well-known big fish. That means fewer "big fish" to go around.

JH and Urbz can work in tandem to create playing field where the B1G champion is always in the playoff and well rested, and is always M or O-state --- I think that's coming. Let the SEC and ACC horde these players --- what's important for M is that they get distributed amongst the SEC and ACC schools a bit better than now. Let the SEC champion take a pounding getting to the championship game --- or better yet let them absorb 2-3 losses and not make it to the playoffs at all.

Unfortunately, the victims in all this, as JH, Delano Hill, and other M players have noted is the under-the-radar recruits who are trying to earn a big-time scholarship.

I believe this will prove to be a stupid move by the SEC and ACC --- it makes them and NCAA look petty, which is what I believe is exactly what JH was going for.

                        Comment

                        • as his next move, JH should go to Steven Ross about funding an "Michigan HS Academy" in Florida --- in a way competing with IMG.

That would really cause fits down in Saban-land

More power to him in that regard. I'm sure he'll come up with something else. This move by the NCAA has just reinforced his credibility as the innovator to be feared by Saban and Meyer. Dantonio is now in a lower league it seems -- not even a player in the Harbaugh league. You have to admire Harbaugh for establishing a league of his own.

Urban Meyer is still the reigning champ, IMO. Saban has done well, but he's not as sharp as Meyer. I don't know if Harbaugh will ever top Meyer. Meyer will have to up his game, though. Harbaugh has been gaining on him fast, and will go right past him unless Meyer comes up with something, like some NFL credentials (oh wait, he can't get those at OSU).

You realize satellite camps have gone on for years, right? Normally a coach goes as a guest to help another coaches camp or a regional camp. It was the team practice in Florida that tipped this IMO.
