  • The solution is simple.

Figure out a way for ESPN/Turner/Fox to cover the satellite camps on national live TV, then make them pay 50 Gabillion dollars for the broadcasting rights. Make sure the NCAA gets their cut, and they'll approve it so fast it'll make everyone's head spin.

    • The rules state coaching clinics can only happen on the host school's campus right? Why not buy a small college down in Florida and make it an extension of the main campus in Ann Arbor?

      • The B10 should now propose 4-year scholarships only. At least that would even the system a little.

I suspect that, in addition to protecting their recruiting grounds, not many of the coaching staffs wanted the extra work.

        • It was all about protecting their recruiting grounds, little to nothing else. What do our lawyers here think about how the court would this vote?

Mike Leach had a nearly perfect response to this. When he was at Texas Tech, he'd run satellite camps in both Houston and Dallas to recruit the talent from the other side of the state of Texas.

Are you saying no 5th year/red shirt, or are you saying all scholarship offers should be 4 years, rather than 'renewable' on a yearly basis?

I'm all for making scholarships a 4 year deal, as long as the kid is following all academic and school rules. He shouldn't lose his scholarship just because the coach recruited "Johnny Super-Arm" behind him. It would make coaches be more sure of their offers.

            Yes, including Harbaugh.

            • Guaranteed for 4 years, 5th has always been an option for schools and that's only if they received a redshirt.

              • I want to play be the same rules as the SEC. If that means culling the heard, so be it. No more trying to compete with arm tied behind our back.

                • Well, if the rules regarding satellite camps are "now uniform nationwide", then scholarship rules should be "uniform nationwide" as well.

I meant that they should all be for a minimum of 4 years. I'd also have no problem going back to about 105 total scholarships rather than 85.

Actually, that is a hard question. There could be several courts, and the SEC and ACC would prefer state courts.

I think there is a prima facia case of discrimination against poor kids. But that is not illegal. The Plaintiff would have to prove actual harm, in other words "I would have gotten a scholarship if I had the chance to attend a satellite camp." Realistically, that is a tough pull. You have to prove what "would" have happened.

Both the Freep and the News have an article about Curtis Blackwell and the Strong Mind, Strong Body camps. Blackwell got a scholarship to a smaller college, but he did get a college education by playing football. Poor kids are benefitted by maximum exposure to college football coaches. Of course, rich kids can pay to attend big-time college camps.

I think a court would ultimately say that this is a political, not legal, question, and that the colleges that want to hold satellite camps should try to change the NCAA's mind.

                          • The satellite camps would be worthless to Michigan once everyone started doing them. The Harbaugh advantage is being ahead of the pack, tweaking the establishment. More power to him in that regard. I'm sure he'll come up with something else. This move by the NCAA has just reinforced his credibility as the innovator to be feared by Saban and Meyer. Dantonio is now in a lower league it seems -- not even a player in the Harbaugh league. You have to admire Harbaugh for establishing a league of his own.

Urban Meyer is still the reigning champ, IMO. Saban has done well, but he's not as sharp as Meyer. I don't know if Harbaugh will ever top Meyer. Meyer will have to up his game, though. Harbaugh has been gaining on him fast, and will go right past him unless Meyer comes up with something, like some NFL credentials (oh wait, he can't get those at OSU).

                            • Meyer just has to keep winning and he'll be fine. So does Dantonio, although that seems more perilous. I love what JH is doing and I agree that the value is in being innovative, which he seems likely to continue to do. But he's also got to beat his rivals.

                              • Satellite camps were used all the time before HARBAUGH!!!!

And M stole recruits from Saban? I guess Rashan Gary had an offer from every one, but who else?
Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?
                                Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.
