• The head coach in Spartan land has made a career out of being a dick. As I see it, nobody over there has a problem with it, as long as he's putting up superior numbers on the scoreboard. Maybe Harbaugh is taking a page from the master.

        • Michigan offered 6 players from '17 and '18 class from Ellenwood GA recently. The school is named Ellenwood Cedar Something. Anyone have any first hand knowledge of the program?

Don't think it's only of benefit to one side though... That recruit is instantly bona fide, elevated by his connection to The University of Michigan, regardless of what happens later.

            • I get it. Yes, it hurts when a scholarship isn't available to commits later on in the process. I have to think that getting a scholarship from M early on helps open doors for the athlete and helps scouting departments from other schools. School A says "here's a scholarship", school B says "who the hell is this guy, let's do some research." To me it's a win-win for both parties, the athlete who gets little recognition in the first place (Rashad Weaver) and the school which gets an early "Plan B" commit. I'd be interested to see when Weaver received offers from schools.

                • Once again, sour grapes is incorrectly defined or applied. Sour grapes is from the fable ascribed to Aesop of the fox who after finding himself unable to reach some grapes he had desired disparaged them as sour. It's the "I really didn't want them anyway" defense.

                    • I agree with Talent the purpose is, one you build your brand in national recruiting hotspots, like Florida, Bama, Texas, California, etc. As importantly, you hope to build recruiting pipelines with the high school coaches/programs near those events. Just a few major pipelines at some of the very huge football factory would pay huge recruiting dividends.

                      •
I agree with drok. I think a better way of handling the situation would have been for Harbaugh and his staff to contact all the players who committed to Hoke, and let them know that they were going to be re-evaluated by the new staff. This wouldn't necessarily mean that all offers were pulled, but it would mean that Harbaugh and his staff wanted to do their own evaluation. Then let the players know that they would each be contacted and advised of where they stood with the new staff.

Swenson is going to go to a B1G school somewhere. Pat Fitzgerald said he has a standing offer to go to NW, and that's a pretty decent program with excellent academics. So, Swenson isn't going to get stuck going to Podunk CC in Lima Ohio or something.

It does appear that it could have been handled better. Of course, we're missing one whole side of the story, so who knows ... haters are gonna jump on this, and lovers are gonna defend....
I remember a ways back when Mark Dantonio fired back and made a comment about Mike Harts little brother comment (see link) and mentioned Mike Hart by name in that comment. I thought that Dantonio was pretty much of a dickhead for that statement--not so much because he made it but because he mentioned Hart specifically. Ok, so he's a dickhead anyway. It's my thinking that, when dealing with kids, the university and the coach should always take the high road. They are the adults. So, while i''m sure that with respect to Swenson the whole story may not have surfaced, I'm bothered by at least one comment suggesting that Swenson was told to camp at M. Maybe he couldn't afford to camp. Not sure that is likely but ? I'm also a bit bothered by "justifications" that kids should read between the lines i.e. coaches losing contact with them or that recruits somehow benefit enormously from just receiving an offer. What matters to me that our coach and university offered a scholarship and should stand behind that unless there is a more compelling reason than we found a better player. I almost always hate the "everybody does it" rationale. If the kid, his parents, and team decide to "screw the pooch" that's on them. I know that I may be missing the big picture and that the discussion of what is a "committable commit" etc. and that recruiting in general is pretty complicated. I know there is a game to be played. But, more than wins, I want our coaches and university to be respected. It's really hard, if not impossible, to say that JH has done anything but be above board with kids in the recruiting process. But, I hate to have bad thoghts creep into my mind. Someone posted about JH dominating the news cycle. That's good but I want it to be for all the right reasons. Anyway, I would have to at least agree with Liney's statement that it does appear "that things could have been handled better."

Hart hasn't been made available for interviews this week, but Dantonio says of the five-year old comment, "We'll let it live on in hearts and minds."

It took him awhile to resurface after 38-0. I guess he was hanging out under the bridge until he found something he thought he could use to poke us with. His life has meaning again. Doesn't matter that we don't rate his opinion as noteworthy.

The it benefits both sides excuse is hilarious. Here's an idea. Let's offer this kid a scholarship. It will raise his exposure level ... then when he commits ... quits taking trips to other schools, makes plans to enroll in AA ... and then we stiff him 1 week before signing day, we can pump our chest and say we helped the kid out.

                            got it.

Should Harbaugh not evaluate recruits he inherited from Hoke? Does a recruit who verballed two years ago have a responsibility to continue to earn the scholarship, or does he get a free pass because Hoke was a bad evaluator of talent? Swenson learned a valuable lesson - never assume you've got the job or that you can't lose the job.
